Doctors Hesitant to Seek Help to Prevent Suicides: AZ Podiatrist
Overall, the CDC reports, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. – responsible for more than 47,500 deaths in 2019. Physicians are hesitant to seek help because of the stigma that surrounds mental health, and they’re afraid of how others may perceive them, especially when their struggles are documented, said Zachary Flynn, DPM, a podiatric surgeon in Phoenix.

“Just the fact that it’s on (a document) gives it a negative stigma and makes the provider scared to acknowledge ‘Hey, there might be a problem,’” he said. Flynn said medical providers can struggle to combat the pressures of their demanding field and separate their mental and physical worlds. “You’re trained and you’re bred to be so physical you kind of have to acknowledge, ‘Hey, there’s an emotional aspect of health, the mental aspect of health.’”

Geisinger providers — including physicians, physician assistants, and certified registered nurse practitioners — were recognized for ranking in the top 10 percent nationally for patient experience at the health system’s annual Top Patient Experience Clinicians Awards, which were held virtually this year.

Her clinical interests include the diabetic foot and educating on, preventing, and caring for lower-extremity wounds. Dr. Zinszer attended Temple University, where she earned her degree in podiatry. She completed a residency at the University of Texas, San Antonio, and a second residency at Temple University Hospital. She is certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry.

7 Common Estate Planning Mistakes To Avoid
Hiring an estate planning attorney can be a pricey proposition, leading many to seek out online sources to create their own estate planning documents. Without the guidance of an attorney, though, many who go-it-alone make costly mistakes. Here are some estate planning mistakes to avoid:
2. Relying only on joint tenancy to avoid probate.
Wills only direct the transfer of certain assets at your death; many assets are transferred outside of wills. For example, assets titled in joint tenancy pass to the surviving joint tenant, not per the terms of your will. Many believe that titling property in this way avoids probate. That is not the case. Assets titled in joint tenancy only avoid probate at the first death. When the surviving spouse dies, the assets will typically end up in probate.

We lost LV on Sunday, January 2, 2022 after a brief, but aggressive bout of lung cancer. A man of substance and style, he loved his family, his food, and his music. He served two years in the Armed Forces before heading West to the Bay Area where he decided to pursue a degree at the California College of Podiatric Medicine.

The Bay Area was good to LV. It was here that he and his wife Brenda built a life. The Bay Area was where he became a father to his children, Kitt and Brett, and where he built a successful professional career.

RE: The Passing of LV Grant, DPM
Today, the world is a little less bright following the knowledge of the passing of LV Grant, DPM. LV was a graduate of the class of 1971 at the California College of Podiatric Medicine during the days of its location at 1770 Eddy Street in San Francisco, California.
LV was one of the brightest and talented students of the era in the college’s history in SF, ultimately upon graduation finding himself selected for one of our top residency programs at Highland General Hospital/Alameda County Hospital (a teaching affiliate of the University of California Medical Centers). I met LV during his 4th year clinical clerkships and knew that he was a very perfect mentor which proved correct in my own personal and professional growth.
LV soon distinguished post-residency as a premier podiatric surgeon over the following 30+ years in-the greater San Francisco Bay Area, primarily focused upon the East Oakland/Mid Town Oakland Hospital and Medical Center region. LV provided a level of expert care and compassion to the African American community of the East Bay. Needless to say, he was special to me. He was a person of character and ethics; a friend I will miss dearly. R.I.P., Dr. LV Grant. You did good my friend!

I did not accept Medicare assignment for many years. During this time, I did evoked nerve tests on many diabetic patients. We had them sign ABNs and submitted claims to Medicare which they paid. After one year of payments, we stopped having patients sign ABNs. Two years later, Medicare sent me a notification advising me they paid those claims in error and wanted me to reimburse them for their payments. I replied that they had not paid me at all and the payments had been made to patients so they would need to collect from the patients. They never contacted me again and as far as I know, they never contacted any of my patients. I am fairly confident that if I had accepted assignment and been paid, I would have needed to pay a significant amount of money back.
I did accept assignment for a few years and found that, although my patient load increased slightly, my net income actually decreased and my hassle factor increased. So I returned to no longer accepting assignment. We still file for our Medicare patients since this is a requirement of Medicare, but we no longer have to fight the rejection battles.

I wholeheartedly disagree with Dr. Kiel’s assessment of our reputation among the public. Too often, I have heard people say that they thought they broke their toe or foot and went to an orthopedist. When I tell them they should see a podiatrist for foot problems, they’ll say "oh but this was a fracture." The public may know we treat feet but they have no idea what our scope of practice is. At the same time, a good many orthopedists and other MDs belittle our training and expertise.
I personally have made it a practice to inform my patients what our scope and expertise in foot and ankle care is. But that doesn’t put a dent in the misinformation about us. I do agree that there are many MDs and DOs who hate what has happened to medicine and are very unhappy. I know quite a few of them. But they don’t feel ashamed of who they are. Too many podiatrists do.
