PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
NY Podiatrist Advocates Going Barefoot at Home
“I’m a big advocate for going barefoot at home,” Robert Conenello, DPM said. “[The practice] increases intrinsic muscular strength within the feet.” He explained that the primary benefit of walking barefoot is the reinforcement of the muscles in the feet, which tend to weaken “as we age and wear shoes.” These muscles are closely linked to our overall mobility, so their deterioration can contribute to reduced movement as we get older.
|
Dr. Robert Conenello |
“Many of the pathologies that I see in my practice are due to the inability to engage these muscles for normal movements and metabolic efficiency,” Dr. Conenello added. While Conenello acknowledges similar risks — such as stepping on pathogens like fungi in moist environments — he is quick to emphasize that “proper hygiene can help mitigate these risks.”

PODIATRIC PODCASTS |
VA Podiatrist Reviews Pedorthic Footwear Customization
Ben Pearl, DPM interviewed Bob Schwartz, CPed and Herman Jaramillo, his pedorthic technician, on his podcast, Fit Foot U. The value of experienced personnel in fitting and modifying shoes was highlighted for the high risk foot and the everyday walker. The importance of matching a proper last with a patient's foot and why features such as rockers can be part of everyday footwear were demonstrated.

Schwartz gave examples with his technician of how standard sneakers can be transformed into a customized high top. Dr. Pearl added that the shoes look like an Air Jordan from an aesthetic standpoint but have orthopedic features to help with common foot issues.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Ways to Retain Great Physicians
Healthcare organizations invest significant time, energy, and money into hiring physicians. But according to Douglas Farrago, MD, the author of The Hospital Guide to Physician Retention, very few invest adequate resources into keeping physicians. Here are some steps to take.
1. Assess physician satisfaction
According to Dr. Farrago, most organizations fail to accurately assess physician well-being in the workplace. “Using physician retention rates is difficult because most companies don’t actually want to know the number,” he says, noting that he worked at an organization that claimed to have very high physician retention, which was contrary to his direct observation. “The center had 80 doctors come and go just in the year that I was there.” Further, relying on exit interviews to determine why physicians are leaving is challenging, as doctors may be hesitant to ‘burn bridges.’

RESPONSES/COMMENTS ( INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY IN THE NEWS) |
RE: New Qualification to Boost Foot Care Training and Diabetes Management
From: Jeff Carnett, DPM, Grad, Dip (Ed), MFA
I was not surprised to see this headline but for U.S. trained podiatrists to understand its significance, I would like to provide a bit of context. To preface my comments, I worked in Asia for 20 years, Australia for 5 years, and New Zealand for 5 years ending in 2023. During my tenure there, I managed the largest podiatry service in the country geographically and perhaps in volume. We were situated under the Diabetes and Endocrinology Unit and as such only provided care to diabetic patients with wounds. General preventative diabetic care was provided by the private sector and once a wound arose the patient was referred back to our service.
In this article, there is mention of difficulty in hiring podiatrists and time to train. To be a 'podiatrist' in New Zealand, one needs a 3-year bachelor's degree in 'podiatry'. This course emphasizes...
