Microplastics are a Hazard to Our Health: MI Podiatrist
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "Plastic is an integral part of our world, like it or not. Although research into alternatives is ongoing, plastic in all its many forms is churned out by our world at a prodigious rate. And too much of it gets into our bodies, either through drinking water or intentionally placed into our cosmetics. But the consequences of this exposure to our health and wellbeing are not yet well understood, despite the fact these materials have been pumped out, and consequently into our bodies, for decades now."
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
"Clearly, further research is vital to understanding the adverse effects of microplastics. What are they doing to our immunity, our hormones, our lung health? There may be numerous complications from our ongoing exposure to microplastics that occur over time and with sufficient accumulation. We simply don’t know enough. And until we do, either get off the grid…..or get exposed," says Dr. McLean.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Ways to Retain Great Physicians
Healthcare organizations invest significant time, energy, and money into hiring physicians. But according to Douglas Farrago, MD, the author of The Hospital Guide to Physician Retention, very few invest adequate resources into keeping physicians. Here are some steps to take.
2. Show doctors that you care
Practices need to show physicians that they are valued, says Farrago, who experienced the opposite at one organization he worked for. “Six months after my practice partners and I were recruited to join a new hospital, the CEO didn’t even recognize me,” he says, a striking contrast from the attitude he experienced before he signed his employment contract. “The administration went from throwing us a big party and hugging us to not even acknowledging us. Now, does that leave a mark? It does.”

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1 |
RE: The Passing of Richard “Rick” Cullen, DPM
Richard “Rick” Cullen, DPM, sports medicine podiatrist, passed away in Boston, MA on December 14, 2024 aged 73 years. A gifted doctor, he will be remembered for his expertise and dedication to his patients, for over 40 years.
|
Dr. Richard Cullen |
He attended Fairfield University class of 1974, Fairfield, CT and Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine, class of 1983, Philadelphia, PA. After graduation, he joined Sports Medicine Brookline, MA, where he became one of the top sports medical podiatrists in the Boston area. He was a consultant to the Boston Celtics, working closely with the team physician. His long career in sports medicine included his private practice in Needham, MA. A yearly highlight was volunteering at the Boston Marathon.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2 |
I started my career in podiatry 14 years ago and stepped into the exhibit hall not knowing the world I was entering; I’ll never forget the “presence” of one woman. SuEllen epitomizes what it means to “man a booth.” Speaking of “manning” a booth, there was zero, “I’m a woman, hear me roar.” No, she just did it.
For years, I watched from my booth a tenacious road warrior show up, on time, every day, to get it done… and dressed in the classic “SuEllen uniform” (I don’t even have to say it, you can see it). She was unapologetically SuEllen and you knew when she was in the room. There are some people you don’t really notice whether they are there or not. I am saddened to know that there will be something noticeably missing in those halls.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE) |
RE: Medicare and Sequestration
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM
We are still in sequestration. To my knowledge, this will continue through 2032. This Medicare sequestration is essentially a backstop because lawmakers could not reach an agreement on how to meet the maximum deficit amount for each fiscal year. If doctors have to incur the pain of their salary being reduced year after year, how do these lawmakers give themselves raises? And why aren't they mandated to share in the 2% reductions in their salaries? After all, they are the ones who can't balance the budget, not the doctors.
Jeffrey Kass, DPM, Forest Hills, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS) |
From: Stephen Musser, DPM
I could not disagree more. The only time (except for in the shower or bathtub) I advise my patients to go barefoot at home is when they are sitting down. Too many times, I see patients with foreign bodies, puncture wounds due to going barefoot or just wearing socks around the house. And yes, 70+% of the time they're diabetic.
Stephen Musser, DPM, Cleveland, OH

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) |
From: Daniel Chaskin, DPM
There is a text I bought on this topic titled VisualDx: Essential Dermatology in Pigmented Skin. Please understand that dermatoscopic findings might be interpreted differently in pigmented skin of the feet. This is especially true of the palms and soles.
Daniel Chaskin, DPM, Ridgewood, NY
