OH Podiatrist Appointed to the CPT Editorial Panel
In December 2023, Sarah Abshier, DPM, APMA’s CPT alternate advisor, was appointed to serve a four-year term representing the Health Care Professional Advisory Committee (HCPAC) on the CPT Editorial Panel. Dr. Abshier is believed to be only the second podiatric physician to serve in this capacity.
|
|
Dr. Sarah Abshier |
Her term is effective at the conclusion of the February 2024 CPT Editorial Panel meeting and runs through the February 2028 CPT Editorial Panel meeting. Dr. Abshier is eligible for an additional four-year term at that time contingent upon AMA Board of Trustees’ approval.

Slippers Need Periodic Washing: MA Podiatrist
If you have a trusty pair of slippers that you love, chances are you're wearing them every day. But when's the last time you actually washed them? Slippers that haven't seen the inside of your washing machine in a while might start to harbor some funky inhabitants, says Alissa Kuizinas, DPM, a podiatrist in Concord, Massachusetts. And in some cases, your feet or toenails could potentially pay an unpleasant price.
|
|
Dr. Alissa Kuizinas |
"Slippers can harbor bacteria and fungus, which causes athlete's foot and fungal toenails, along with viruses that cause plantar warts," Dr. Kuizinas says. Nasty germs aside, the insides of your slippers can also accumulate dead skin cells, dust, or other debris that could potentially make your feet itchy or irritated, she adds. According to Dr. Kuizinas, "a good rule of thumb is to wash them when there is any visible debris or dirt, any malodor, or any moisture present inside of the slippers."

NJ Podiatrist Uses New Technology to Create 3D Customized Bones
Holy Name Hospital recently unveiled its team now has the ability to use “an unparalleled tool” in orthopedic surgery: a custom 3D-printed bone implant. The Teaneck-based health system announced Dec. 27 that Peter Iannuzzi, DPM, a Holy Name podiatric surgeon, performed the hospital’s first surgery using this technology to repair a patient’s foot and ankle with a 3D-printed titanium alloy bone and new joint.

Dr. Peter Iannuzzi |
“The ability to replicate a bone through this 3D procedure marks a significant milestone in patient care,” Iannuzzi said in a statement. “We are now equipped with an unparalleled tool to advance surgical interventions, ultimately providing our patients with better outcomes and improved quality of life.”

Patient Experience Trends Shaping Healthcare in 2024
Healthcare is now evolving more rapidly than it ever has and patient experience is rightly poised for a transformational shift in 2024. Here are some of the areas where we expect to see these changes take place:
4. Integrated healthcare management platforms: Simplifying operations
The need for streamlined administrative processes has become a prominent challenge, especially for multi-location medical practices. The disparity in patient experiences across various locations has spotlighted the urgency for the standardization of the highest benchmarks. Integrated Healthcare Management Platforms are emerging as a solution, consolidating a hodgepodge of disparate software programs for billing, scheduling, and patient records into a amalgamated platform. When unified, these platforms streamline administrative tasks and safeguard standardized procedures across locations, and significantly alleviate the burden on already overworked office staff.

| QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) | |
Query: Hospital Working Against Podiatry
For the past year, most podiatrists who are on staff at our hospital were in a category which did not allow for clinical privileges. We opted for this due to a few reasons. The biggest was that the hospital would only call podiatry for inpatient wound consults, and would never call podiatry for any injuries, nor would they refer any injury follow-up care to podiatry. There was no monetary compensation from the hospital for on-call services.
Once the majority of podiatrists opted to give up clinical privileges, only a handful of podiatrists were left taking call for a service that is fairly busy. The hospital then began paying these few podiatrists for on-call services. Recently, the hospital administration enacted a change to the By-laws which removed the option to remain on-staff while having no clinical privileges. The options forced upon all podiatrists was to take call for wounds or to resign. They also decided to discontinue paying podiatrists for on-call services. Has anyone been faced with a similar situation? I'm wondering about the ethics and legality of the hospital administration's actions.

Query: Post-Op Debridement in the Office
If a podiatrist performs a TMA and does not indicate within the operative note that there will be staged debridement in the office, what should be documented in the office note to support a wound debridement in the global period? A lack of any documented reason for the debridement would be considered to be included in the global, in my opinion. Routine post-op debridement in the office without documentation of a complication is included in the global, correct?

From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH
From a California perspective, doing a thigh biopsy is okay in California for podiatrists if that is what is required to diagnose a neuropathy concern of the feet. The law reads that if you must do a test or procedure to help/diagnose foot or ankle symptoms, i.e. neuropathy of the foot, it is LEGAL for us to do this. Recently, I went to a dinner meeting for this device, and a pain specialist discussed the procedure of the spinal insertion of the device. I am 100% certain that podiatrists can take the course that Abbott labs offer, and start implanting tomorrow.
As podiatric surgeons, we have more training in surgery than a pain care specialist. I want to take the course and would do this procedure for my patients in a minute. Our profession needs to start having to think a bit more progressively. As a 3-year residency trained podiatric surgeon, I truly believe I have a superior surgical skill set over the average pain care specialist out in practice just learning to do this procedure at a certified lab course.
I have already called Abbott labs and they do offer courses on this device for practitioners who did not get residency training. I strongly encourage my fellow practitioners to take the course and start doing these procedures. It not only will help our patients but will allow better care and follow-up as we are the primary providers for many neuropathy patients.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Steve Corey. We were classmates at PCPM, and we worked together on many issues at the school, since I was President and he was Vice-President of PPMSA. Both being pharmacists also, we spent time together informally mentoring our fellow classmates in pharmacology. He was so concerned with pushing the school and the student body forward, for the betterment of each individual as well as the profession as a whole. Later, we caught up at our residency review when I was faculty at the University of Pittsburgh Residency Program, and he was a program evaluator for CPME. Although we only had a few moments to talk, I was impressed with his continued zeal for improving the profession, and his dedication to podiatric education. Our profession will miss him. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.
Richard M. Maleski, DPM, R.Ph, Pittsburgh, PA
Only yesterday, did I learn of Steve's death. I am so personally disappointed to receive this news. He was an incredible man, podiatric surgeon, and educator. I remember him well as an outstanding medical student at PCPM when I worked in the Surgical Department of PCPM in the mid-1980s. He was a great student and further developed into a great podiatric surgeon. Always the consummate gentleman, Steve made friends quickly in all situations. I really am at a loss for words and express my deepest sympathy to his wife and family. RIP Steve.
