RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA HOD NEWS)

RE: APMA House of Delegates Passes Emergency Resolution on CPME 320 Residency Training Standards

From: Lee C. Rogers, DPM

I’m proud of the APMA House of Delegates on passing Emergency Policy Proposition 5-21 by a supermajority of 83% and I applaud the California Podiatric Medical Association who sponsored the resolution. This is a very strong recommendation from the profession that CPME adopt residency training standards which bring us closer to parity with MD/DO standards.

The public comment period on CPME 320 ended on 2/15 and the major stakeholders have yet to see the those comments be released by CPME in order to complete their duties of collaborating on the standards. But I am hopeful CPME will listen to the many comments and review the multiple PM News quick polls in order to revise the draft to meet the needs of the public, the profession, and the medical community.

This is a good opportunity to step back and look at the passing of the recent resolution on CPME 320. As I mentioned previously, there is not much difference to me whether we are DPMs or MDs. I understand the political and the billing consequences of same, but the reality is the educational directives need to be increased because parity should be based on the understanding and not just on a name change.

The podiatric profession has made tremendous leaps in education and changes in residency and related fellowships over the past 40 years. This is another step forward so that our understanding and the treatment of lower extremity pathology cannot be challenged and is the very best worldwide. We strive in that direction and I do believe this is a step to help move that forward. I applaud all the movers and shakers to help put this together and the house for voting as well.

A personal standing ovation for Paul Liswood, DPM for his President’s Award honor at the 99th APMA House of Delegates. Dr. Liswood has been a constant, competent advocate for the exceptional value and quality of podiatric care. He has spent innumerable hours with policymakers, insurance providers, practitioners, and patients, providing real life examples of how preventative care  saves lives and limbs. He has also authored several white papers on the subject and has demonstrated time and time again his exemplary grasp on why podiatry is a significant part of the team care approach. He is a great ambassador for podiatry and for medicine!
