PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
IL Podiatrist Discusses How to Keep Feet Warm While Cycling in Winter

“Often women will come into my office and say, ‘my feet are cold, I must have poor circulation.’ We’ll test their circulation and it’s fine; the problem is that their feet are wet,” says Joanne Davis, DPM, a Chicago-based podiatrist and avid cyclist. “As a baseline, your feet produce one pint of moisture—in the form of sweat—every day.” Exercise increases that amount, she adds. Riding creates much more evaporative cooling than running or walking, since zipping along at 15 miles per hour generates quite a draft. If your feet are wet—even with a sock and a shoe in between you and the wind—you’ll be feeling a chill in no time.

Dr. Joanne Davis

So, if you have chronically cold feet, you probably have chronically wet feet. The easiest way to fix this problem is to change your socks, early and often. Dr. Davis rides with a thin, wicking sock liner plus a warm pair of socks, and packs an extra set of socks in her jersey pockets. Halfway through the ride, she switches to the dry pair.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
UK Podiatrist Caring for Homeless People is Made MBE

A woman who set out to help homeless people after she saw them limping and in pain has been recognized for her work. Deborah Monk, a podiatrist, set up services for rough sleepers, where she tended to their feet and listened to their stories without judging them.

Deborah Monk

Some days she heard accounts that left her in tears, but she said it was about "listening with compassion and making them feel valued as human beings." The 61-year-old from Redditch, Worcestershire, who founded the charity Forgotten Feet in 2013, has been made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in the King's New Year Honors list.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Ways to Show Practice Staff You Appreciate Them This Holiday Season

Here are some holiday-season moves that work for real-world practices — especially when they’re specific, inclusive, and tied to the day-to-day grind.

3) Give time back where you can

If your budget is tight, time is often the most meaningful “bonus.” Even a few hours can feel huge in December.

Also, if you’re planning a party or event, make attendance truly optional and be ready to accommodate religious observances. The EEOC’s religious accommodations fact sheet is a helpful refresher for leaders scheduling holiday-season activities.

Try this: Offer a “late start” or “early out” rotation during a slower half-day, or add an extra floating holiday that staff can use through Q1.

CODING & BILLING Q&As FROM CODINGHELPLINE.COM
Query:  Can  Podiatrists Bill for X-Rays of the Tibia and Fibula?

Are podiatrists in the state of Michigan or elsewhere allowed to take and bill leg x-rays or x-rays of the tibia and fibula?

Jeffrey Klein, DPM, Livonia, MI

Response from Codinghelpline.com: According to the Michigan Public Health Code Act 368 of 1978 Part 180 Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, podiatrists may perform the evaluation, diagnosis, management, and prevention of conditions of the lower extremities, including local manifestations of systemic disease in the human foot and ankle, by attending to and advising patients and through the use of devices, diagnostic tests, drugs and biologicals, surgical procedures, or other means. The evaluation, diagnosis, management, and prevention of conditions of the lower extremities may include osseous and soft tissue procedures that address the pathology of the foot, ankle, and the contiguous attachments below the tibial tuberosity.

I would research the law in other states prior to performing x-rays on the lower leg. If the law permits treatment up to the tibial tuberosity, as it does in Michigan, I would assume the taking of x-rays would be permitted.

Alan Bass, DPM, Manalapan, NJ

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
RE: Who thinks podiatrists are physicians? National Advertising, That's Who
From: H. David Gottlieb, DPM

The commercials for the neuritis supplement Nervive feature (according to the manufacturer) the retired physician Dr. Samuel Ruggiero. Purely on a hunch, I did a Google search. It turns out that the retired physician, as promoted on national advertising, is a retired podiatrist. Referencing the court room scene in the movie Miracle on 34th Street when the preponderance of the nation calls something to be true, as in this case, it can be considered as a true reflection of national belief.

When a national marketing campaign calls a retired member of our profession a 'retired physician', I think it's safe to say that we are considered physicians by the majority of the American public. Should one think otherwise, it betrays their lack of confidence in their own worth. Don't put your insecurities and inferiority complex on me. "Woe is me" is a cry for pity, not action.

H. David Gottlieb, DPM, Baltimore, MD

Editor's comment: Dr. Samuel Ruggiero is a retired New York podiatrist. In New York podiatrists are not legally permitted to call themselves physicians. Hopefully, this will eventually change.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM

The announcement of the Bako sale at the published value should tell you something with reference to industry marketing of podiatrists: "there is gold in them there hills". Bako is proof that podiatrists as an entity provide a large potential sales market for a variety of services and products such as pharmaceutical, device, therapy, wound care products. I am old enough to remember the days when other than a few topical creams, no sales representative from any industry called on podiatrists.

Times have changed with the growth of the profession. I recall a paucity of exhibitors at our meetings. Now look at meetings such as some regional, state, or local society meetings where the ratio of exhibitors to registrants is less than 4 to 1, yet the exhibitors continue to be the "gift that keeps on giving " like the jelly of the month club cited by Uncle Eddy. Conversely, look at meetings such as ACFAS with expansive exhibit halls and large...
