PUBLISHED PODIATRISTS |
GA Podiatrist Publishes 4th Novel
The latest book from Savannah author Dr. William Harris, Jr. is titled Speak Nothing of the Dead but Good. It’s the fourth novel from the Savannah native, a man who was trained to be a podiatrist, but discovered a passion to tell stories set in the places he loves and knows best — Savannah and the Georgia coast.

Dr. William Harris, Jr. |
His latest work bears some resemblance to his previous books — Delirium of the Brave, No Enemy But Time, and Wassaw Sound— in terms of history, topography, and local people.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Phone Scripts Save Time
Develop phone scripts for your staff in order to help them with pre-authorizations, referrals, and questions asked on a patient’s first call. These scripts can save significant time, reduce mistakes, and enhance patient satisfaction. Clear and concise phone scripts can quickly answer common questions in the best possible fashion, which might otherwise be triaged to medical assistants, nurses, or doctors.
Start by going through the ten most commonly asked questions with your staff. Begin role-playing to practice delivering information to patients in the most efficient manner. After the first ten questions on the list are mastered, move on to the next ten or however many are needed to keep the flow of information and conversation on the phone going smoothly.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM QUICK POLL) - PART 1A |
RE: Would You Change Occupations if You Could?
From: Jim Fisher, DPM, Dan Klein, DPM
I have to ask why this approximately 70% of podiatrists would consider changing professions if they could. Armed with that knowledge, maybe we could do something. I am not unhappy, but I would like to make more money considering the time that I spend "working." My brother is an ER doc. He is really, really unhappy; his reasons are malpractice, daily frustrations with people, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). His PTSD can be summed up in his oft used phrase: "One more dead kid and I am outta there." Thank God we see this very rarely in podiatry. "But why do you keep doing it," I asked my brother. And his reply was $10,000/week take home; it might not be worth it, though."
PM News asked one of the most profound and germane questions ever. We need to ask why we keep doing it if we are unhappy; and, if it is possible, we need to individually and collectively deal with it, as "fixing" it may not be a realistic goal.
Podiatry has been trying to compete with mainstream medicine (i.e. MDs and DOs) and demonstrate and, at times, demand recognition as superior in lower extremity expertise and general medicine.
Unfortunately, until our core instruction, including residencies for all graduates, becomes universal and recognized by mainstream medicine, we will never compete for equality in today's medicine. Despite efforts to lobby Congress, and APMA's attempts for recognition, we...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM QUICK POLL) - PART 1 B |
RE: Would You Change Occupations if You Could?
From: Jack A. Reingold, DPM
How about a career that often allows you to take home $200,000 when you are less than 10 years out of college. Or perhaps one that often will let you earn over $300,000 at the peak of your career? One that lets you take time off (for children or personal reasons) and return to the career with minimal earning power loss? One where you virtually will never get laid off? So far, it sounds pretty good! How about one that lets you call your work hour schedule or work part-time? It's sounding better all the time! How about a career that has no mandatory retirement age? One where you can work for as long as you like?
What about personal fulfillment? How about a career where you make a difference? One where you help people? One where you affect the quality of people's lives? I am heading for that career! Wait, I am already there, as a podiatrist! I think most people would like to wake up and have our jobs. Sure, there are a few great jobs out there, but not many. We are blessed to be podiatrists! Don't get me wrong; we have earned these blessings by being smarter and willing to work harder than most. "Love what you do and you will never work a day in your life!"

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR) |
From: John Hogan
My wife, Dr. Gretchen Heutsche, is a podiatrist in a solo practice who is just attesting to Meaningful Use Stage 1. She too was very concerned about Measure 15 and received a quote of upwards of $6000+ to have her Security Risk Assessment. She uses HIPAA Secure Now, which caters to small practices/businesses. We have been pleased with the service and follow-up.
Disclosure: HMB Group is a partner with HIPAA Secure Now.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL/LEGAL) |
From: Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM
I bought a Banyan® crash cart from a plastic surgeon. I also had an oxygen tank. However, even the MD related that he would "call 911". However, for medical-legal reasons, he related that having a crash cart is useful medically-legally. I thought it was wise practice advice and was lucky enough never to require either.
DPMs performing surgery should have the supplies, equipment, instrumentation, and the people available as sources and resources. An AED is now affordable for most practices, and you should be at least willing, ready, and able to use one.
