RI Podiatrist Receives Science Teaching Award

Dr. Joel Gluck of Warwick, RI has been awarded the 2007 Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence for his innovative approach in using problem-based learning in the high school science classroom. This national award is given to professionals who have made significant impacts in the lives of their students.

Problem-based learning utilizes a problem solving technique similar to those used in medical board specialty examinations. Dr. Gluck is a frequent speaker at conferences of the National Science Teacher's Association and is a board member and journal reviewer for the Journal of College Science Teaching.

Retired IL Podiatrist and Author Receives Cyber Christmas Gift

It wouldn’t make a very convenient stocking-stuffer, but how many people receive a Web site for Christmas? Stan and Helen Stites did. The local authors have written three books between them, and while their works have received a respectable amount of attention, the couple’s four daughters decided to offer some additional help.

Stan specializes in Christian fantasy. He wrote, directed and produced one-, two- and three-act comedies for the former Y-Players and has written many pieces of short fiction over the years. He is a former Clinton mayor, editor and co-publisher of The Observer and a retired podiatrist.

Query: Patients and Nail Polish

Is there a standard for dealing with patients who present with nail polish? Some of the patients resist removing it prior to or during the visit. Of course it clogs the burrs, but I'm concerned that I'm supposed to be rendering medical treatment on a nail that I can't see.

RE: NY Ambulatory Surgical Center Accreditation (Harry Goldsmith, DPM)

To add to Dr. Goldsmith's excellent review of accreditation of ambulatory surgical centers in New York State, I would suggest the following site, which refers to the Certificate of Need Process: http://www.nyhealth.gov/nysdoh/cons/about.htm

It is still unclear to me if CON's are (still) required in NY State, but they were for years.

There are a number of clinics that have accreditation by private surgical organizations in New York State. However, most are plastic surgery, bariatric and eye surgery.

It MAY be against New York State Law to bill for a facility fee, even if your facility is so accredited. Unfortunately the Internet does not provide clear data on this. It will be necessary to contact the New York State Department of Health to find out the rules on that. I strongly recommend your being utterly and completely sure you can charge a facility fee prior to doing it. Any mistake on this could put you into risk of healthcare fraud charges.
