PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
5 Ways to Implement AI in Your Practice

Given the growing awareness of how powerful and useful artificial intelligence (AI) can be, healthcare organizations have good reason to try to leverage its vast capabilities. But figuring out how exactly to use this cutting-edge technology to address podiatric care-specific needs is no small feat. As your practice implements AI, there are five key steps to take in order to make sure that technology simplifies this transition.

Step 5: Use analytics to make sure your AI is used widely and well

To maximize and optimize the usage of your AI-powered platform, you need insight into when, where, how, and by whom it is (and isn’t) being used within your practice.

If your AI-powered platform has robust analytics, you can use data to identify and address shortcomings in the use of that technology throughout your organization. Not only is it important to consider these analytics capabilities when shopping for an AI solution, but it’s crucial to actually use them effectively.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC EDUCATION)
From: Jeffrey Trantalis, DPM

My experience in podiatry has nothing to do with the idea of becoming a MD, DO, or DDS. During undergraduate school, I was exposed to the likes of these other professions but decided they were not for me. It was then, I was exposed to podiatry college. After doing my research and due diligence, I decided to venture out to become a podiatrist.

The exposure to surgery, biomechanics, and sports medicine provided a very happy and productive career with no regrets. Like any profession, it is important to work with the community to disseminate your unique podiatric knowledge. My office was in the Seattle, WA area where podiatry was well respected and has a very positive working relationship with the other specialties. Podiatry is important because we provide not only surgical care but a much needed conservative approach to medicine.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS)
From: Kevin C. McDonald, DPM

I read with interest with results of the poll on the biggest threat to our profession. I don’t feel that advanced practice nurses and orthopedic surgeons are threats at all, compared to the lack of applicants to podiatric medical school.

There are no easy answers to this problem but I would like to see a university-affiliated podiatry school develop a six-year program to become a podiatrist after graduating high school. The medical education (and clinic time) could begin in the second year of the program. Additional components could be a) work-study programs for podiatry students as medical assistants in podiatry offices and b) the development of a “Diabetic Foot Center of Excellence” at the school to specialize in great care for diabetic feet and to perform research supporting and proving that podiatry care is a valuable and cost-efficient part of the care of people with diabetes.

The purpose of this program would be to a) increase the length of time for podiatric medical education and b) lower the net financial and time costs of becoming a podiatrist. Letter writers to PM News often advocate for national PR and advertising programs to enhance our status, but I feel that money spent on research proving the value of our work would be a better investment on a national basis.
