Jamaican Podiatrist Discusses Aging Feet
Accoriding to podiatrist Angela Davis, "One of the few things that does not shrink when people get older is their foot. The tendons and ligaments lose their elasticity and they no longer hold the bones and joints together as they used to, which leads to fallen arches and a wider forefoot. It has been estimated that some people over the age of 40 can gain up to half a shoe size every 10 years."
|
|
Angela Davis |
"The fact that all our weight is placed on our feet exacerbates the problems associated with them. As feet age, the fatty pad underneath the ball of the foot can wear thin so that there is no longer a cushion, and it feels a lot like you are walking on the bones. This can lead to great discomfort, corns, and calluses. Gravity can overwhelm the older body. When standing, the circulation is less efficient, so fluid is squeezed from leaky veins into the lower legs, causing them to swell and effectively making them bigger. The skin loses its elasticity, becoming dry and thin, so it can easily be damaged and takes a longer time to heal," says Davis.

Aussie Podiatrist Takes a Cold Plunge IN UK for Charity
Dozens of hardy souls braved the chilly waters at Liverpool’s Albert Dock for the city’s annual boxing day swim. More than fifty people lined up along the slipway at one of Mersey’s best known docks before jumping in to the forty one degree Fahrenheit waters for a post-Christmas event. Two of those people were sisters, Jess and Charlotte Bodell, who are more used to the warmer waters of Bondi Beach, having emigrated to Australia seven years ago.
|
|
Charlotte Bodell |
Charlotte, 30, a podiatrist, said: “Every Friday at 6.30 am, we do a swim for a bipolar charity at Bondi Beach. There the water is 70 degrees Fahrenheit.” So, will this be her coldest swim yet? Charlotte, said: “Hell yeah!” As the sisters emerged from the water, teeth chattering, Charlotte, announced: “Well it’s not Bondi!”

CMS' Latest ICD-10 Claims Testing Sees 76% Acceptance Rate
Slightly more than 3 in 4 claims submitted during a recent partial testing of more than 13,000 ICD-10 claims were accepted by CMS contractors, the CMS announced. Acceptance rates for the so-called “acknowledgement testing,” which involved 500 volunteer healthcare organizations, improved throughout the week with Friday's acceptance rate for test claims at 87%, a CMS statement said. “Nationally, CMS accepted 76% of total test claims. Testing did not identify any issues with the Medicare (fee for service) claims systems.”
This round of testing allowed providers, billing companies, and claims clearinghouses to determine whether CMS could accept their ICD-10-coded claims and return an acknowledgment to the sender that the claims had been accepted or rejected. Payments were not calculated for the coded claims. The CMS said most rejections of professional claims were caused by an invalid national provider identifier in the claim submitted for testing. Some claims bounced because they were submitted with future dates or lacked a needed “companion qualifier,” the agency said.

It is a sad state of affairs that we do not instill the importance of non-surgical care as well as surgery. Let's not give our profession away. It is the best profession around and no one does what we do better.
