PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Five Perks for Motivating Medical Practice Staff

How motivated is your medical team? Happy, hard-working employees are a cornerstone to practice success. A smiling receptionist makes patients feel welcome. A cheerful attitude creates a positive team atmosphere that improves efficiency in completing daily tasks. A motivated team can improve patient satisfaction, productivity, and employee retention. Creating passionate, committed employees requires that physicians and managers believe in their people.

The basic principle for designing motivational perks that work is simple: Ask your employees what they want, and design ways for them to earn it. Here are five ways to start the conversation.
1. Rethink work schedules
2. Ask for input, not feedback
3. Accentuate the positive
4. Offer opportunities for career and professional growth
5. Provide health and wellness programs

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM QUICK POLL) - PART 1A
From: Michael DiMuro, DPM, Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM

This poll is a clear reflection of the sad state of podiatry today. Astonishingly, 55% of podiatrists would change professions and another 15% might change, leaving barely 30% of podiatrists satisfied with their chosen profession. And the situation is actually worse than this poll suggests, since it doesn't factor in the many podiatrists who have already changed careers, including myself. None of this bodes well for the future of this profession, and I believe some fundamental changes are needed to make podiatry a viable career option and attract bright young people to the profession.

Michael DiMuro, DPM, Middle Village, NY, mdimuro@yahoo.com

Dr. Kornfeld hit the nail on the head. Much of the dissatisfaction that I have heard from colleagues over the years has its root in the APMA. They did much to divide us and enabled CPME and the boards to cause significant angst for most of us. We should not forget the students who did not match.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM News quick poll) - PART 1A
From: Brian Kiel, DPM

In response to Dr. Kornfeld's letter regarding podiatrists' dissatisfaction with their profession and its sweeping assumptions, I say let's dig a little deeper before we make such condemnations. A recent Time Magazine poll of U.S. physicians found that of 13,000 doctors, 2/3 were dissatisfied with their profession. In a poll by Forbes magazine, of 24,000 doctors, 54% would choose another profession and in Surgical Products magazine, 40% were unhappy. I don't think that we are any different than the others in the medical field. The non-medical pressures that we face on a daily basis can be overwhelming to many and cause this dissatisfaction.

In his letter, Dr. Kornfeld mentions "making a living" several times, as if that is the driving force for being a doctor. Of course that is important, but most of us went into medicine to provide a service to the public, and if your only motivation is to "make a living," then it is more likely for unhappiness to develop. Enjoying what we do, curing illness, and why we do it, to serve the public are the best reasons to do what we do and the recipe for happiness. By the way, I am one of the 30% who would not change occupations.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL/LEGAL)
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

Dr Bergman is correct. We as podiatrists should not be managing anaphylaxis or a myocardial infarction on our own. I imagine that most physicians, no matter what branch of medicine  they practice,  would call 911 if a patient was suffering with a life-threatening emergency in an office setting.

Anaphylaxis is one of the conditions that does not afford the physician the luxury of placing a call to dial 911 and waiting for help to arrive. Emergency treatment has to be started immediately, or the patient might not live to greet the ambulance. An allergist gave me a copy of the emergency instructions that he and his staff use in case one of their patients develops anaphylaxis in their office. I have this sheet hanging in my office along with easy access to appropriate medications. If anyone is interested, I would be happy to forward you a copy of this page of instructions along with the list of appropriate medications you should have on hand.
