OK Podiatrist Helps Oklahoma City Man in Need
An Oklahoma City man who lived without water in his home for four years continues to reap the benefits of a campaign launched to help him. For the last four years, Jim Watkins, 61, would fill between 75 and 100 half-gallon jugs at outdoor taps of his Mesta Park neighbors who were willing to help out. Watkins used to work odd jobs to get by. About seven years ago, he was walking home after helping a neighbor trim a tree after an ice storm when he tripped on an icy branch on the sidewalk, he said. The resulting puncture wounds have festered for years. His one close companion since the accident has been pain.

He dresses his own wounds and tries to keep them clean. It takes him hours to put on his shoes, he said. Even after getting up to shave or eat, he has to elevate his legs. The pain eases at night, but he doesn’t sleep well. Dr. Chris Green, a podiatric surgeon with OKC Orthopedic Sports & Pain Management, has volunteered to help Jim Watkins with his pain. "I’m here to help him. I see people all the time who need different things. Any time I have the opportunity to help somebody, I really try to do that.”

Device Designed for the Soles of Shoes Allows GPS Tracking
Technology is moving at the speed of light. Anything we can imagine is within an arm's reach of coming through. Well, imagine a world where the latest invention in tracking every system in the body is as deep as the soul, the shoe sole that is. It's called the Sole Trakr. “We use the same cellular network that you use on your cell phone to make calls, and that allows us to transmit the position to our webpage regularly,” Joshua Jackson said.

The technology fits inside these custom formthotics. You put them in your shoes and this box fits with the cellular network. It's stronger than a Bluetooth, because Bluetooth is short-ranged. “So, we used the cellular connection to get over that long distance to get out to our webpage," Jackson explained. Now, you're probably wondering why would you need a GPS device in the soles, when you have devices like cell phones and watches that do the same thing? “Well, the target market for this are really people that don't typically carry cell phones. That'd be let's say children under the age of 12, or seniors who may have Alzheimer's or diagnosed with dementia.

As Medicaid Rolls Swell, Cuts in Payments to Doctors Threaten Access to Care
Just as millions of people are gaining insurance through Medicaid, the program is poised to make deep cuts in payments to many doctors, prompting some physicians and consumer advocates to warn that the reductions could make it more difficult for Medicaid patients to obtain care. The Affordable Care Act provided a big increase in Medicaid payments for primary care in 2013 and 2014. But the increase expires on Thursday — just weeks after the Obama administration told the Supreme Court that doctors and other providers had no legal right to challenge the adequacy of payments they received from Medicaid.
The impact will vary by state, but a study by the Urban Institute, a non-partisan research organization, estimates that doctors who have been receiving the enhanced payments will see their fees for primary care cut by 43 percent, on average.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (DME) | |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
When approaching any questions on your status as a supplier, I suggest you take off your "doctors" hat and put on a "store owners" hat. The National Supplier Clearinghouse really wants to know when your patients can contact the store, and what they are telling you is that the store owner need not always be present. However, what the customer service person did not tell you is that you indeed have that option.
You can instead of selecting hours of operation, instead check off hours by appointment. Selecting a set of hours will obligate your office to be open regardless of...

From: Estelle Albright, DPM
I suggest instead doing a punch biopsy rather than a destructive procedure. I have found these often are verrucae rather than porokeratomas. Code dx = skin neoplasm of uncertain etiology. You can bill for the skin biopsy based on the size of the lesion. 4mm or less needs no sutures, and these heal quickly and leave no scar, and I have never had a recurrence.

RE: New Medical Dicitionary Definitions
Decacodaphobia (fear of ICD-10 adoption). Clinicians require simple tools to transition to the increasing complexity of ICD-10. Not every component of the healthcare delivery system was ready for the transition in 2014.
