HISTORIC PODIATRISTS REMEMBERED
Children Celebrate 100th Christmas Party Started by FL Podiatrist

Even a century later, Sarah Williams Jones continues to be a Christmas miracle to the children of Fort Myers. For the 100th Christmas, a cadre of children came to a corner home in the east part of town and were fed, given gifts, and reveled in the yuletide spirit. The event was held at the Dr. Ella Piper Center.

Dr. Ella Piper

Piper grew up to be a successful podiatrist and helped finance many projects centered on improving the lives of those in east Fort Myers. She also helped finance her mother's annual Dec. 25 event. “Dr. Piper wanted to be happy at this (Christmas) time," said Vivian T. Hill who has been going to the same party for 38 years. The 83-year-old knew Piper.

HEALTHCARE NEWS
Colorado to Vote on Statewide Universal Care

Supporters of universal healthcare in Colorado have gathered enough signatures to put a single-payer state healthcare system up for a vote, according to a recent article in the Denver Post. ColoradoCare will appear on the ballot next year.

Under the initiative, residents would be allowed to choose their healthcare providers, but their bills would be paid by ColoradoCare rather than private insurers. Funding the plan is a proposed 10% payroll tax. Employers would pay 6.67%, and employees 3.33%. Self-employed workers would pay 10% of their net income, according to the report. All together, the tax would raise $25 billion, proponents estimate.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
How to Deal with Negative Online Reviews- Part 1

Online review websites can often determine whether or not a patient decides to use your practice. Reviews matter, and negative ones can derail your practice. Here are some tips on how to deal with negative reviews:

1. Don't delete, respond instead.

Being in business today, even healthcare, leaves you exposed and vulnerable to public criticism. When that first negative review pops up, you might be tempted to delete it and move on. But experts say that would be a bad move. Instead, address the reviewer’s concerns with professionalism and kindness. “Resist the temptation to be defensive, even in outrageous cases, like when the physician has never treated the patient,” said Thomas McClintock, COO of NSI Partners, a Colorado Springs-based consulting company specializing in online marketing and business strategy development. “Most people reading the exchange will be reasonable, especially if you are gracious.”

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) - PART 1A
From: Gregory T. Amarantos, DPM

Why worry about it? Now you can charge the patient whatever fee you feel you deserve. No more audits, "Q" modifiers, or "Meaningless Use." The sooner our profession realizes we are chasing decreasing reimbursements, the better. When you provide quality care, the patient will value your services and pay you accordingly. Presently, how many patients come to us because Medicare pays? When is the last time a patient said thank you for the routine care you provided?

Instead, when you tell the patient the service is not covered, the response is "well, the Dr. Foot doctor down the street always charged Medicare, and I never had to pay", and they walk down the street for the next visit. Let's  follow the dental profession; the staff provides the routine care and we walk in and say hello. My last dental cleaning was $234, which included a $71 fee for the dentist to say hello and "inspect" the cleaning and provide the "exam." Follow the new rules, provide quality care to your patients, and enjoy the fruits of your labor with reduced stress. What a way to start the New Year!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) - PART 1B
From: George Jacobson, DPM

If indeed there is a new interpretation of RFC, it should have been in a bulletin. The response to this post needs to be stronger. The State associations affected need an experienced healthcare attorney to attack this situation. Although an individual should seek competent advice as well, it may be too costly on an individual basis. Many years ago, Florida fought an RFC issue and won. We do not know the particulars here and whether it is widespread. This sounds like an important survey question see if it is a limited or extensive problem. If they get away with this in one region, we'll see it spreading to other regions.
