LA Podiatrist Named Medical Staff President
Daniel T. Hall IV, DPM has been elected Medical Staff President of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital in Lake Charles, Louisiana for 2022. Lake Charles Memorial Hospital serves as the 15th largest hospital in the state of Louisiana. He will be the first podiatrist to serve in this capacity. Dr. Hall has also previously served as past Department Chairman and Chief of Surgery (also first podiatrist to serve in this capacity).

Bahamas Podiatrist Discusses How Diet Affects Gout
According to Monique Mitchell, DPM, MPH, "A gouty attack during the holidays can cancel your plans and ruin all your fun. Changes in your diet, including overindulging in certain foods and beverages, can trigger more gouty attacks this time of year. Foods and beverages that are high in purines should be avoided, since purines are converted in the body to uric acid and can cause gout attacks. People prone to gouty attacks should avoid purine-rich foods such as shellfish (shrimp, crab, lobster, conch, etc.), organ meats (kidney, liver, etc.), red meat, processed meats and cheese, red wine, and beer."

"Foods that help prevent gout include pineapple, ginger, and turmeric for their anti-inflammatory properties; bananas, low fat milk products, and watercress also help prevent gout. Recent studies have shown that people with gout may be able to cut their risk of recurrent attacks in half by eating about one cup or 20 cherries a day. The report states cherries help keep the inflammation in check and may reduce the uric acid levels and inflammation in the body. The researchers credit anthocyanins – antioxidant pigments found in red and purplish fruits and vegetables, including cherries, for the beneficial effect. These antioxidants stabilize unstable molecules called free radicals, which cause inflammation and damage cells and tissue. More studies are being done in this area. To get the benefit, cherry juice and extract tablets can also be taken if you cannot find fresh cherries.

2022 Medical Practice Asset Protection
Asset protection for doctors goes far beyond protecting personal assets from malpractice claims and must include both passive risk management and active defensive measures. Here’s a short list that includes both traditional business and medical practice risks and some of the newer, growing risks specific to current events like social and economic pressures, covid and the politicization of healthcare.
4. Secure your practice against active physical threats. We’ve covered the dangerous politicization of healthcare for years and the fact that medical professionals and healthcare facilities have increasingly been targets for acts of violence. Unfortunately, the country and the practice of medicine are growing increasingly violent, and your leadership team has a legal duty to protect staff and patients from foreseeable risks. This includes everything from basic physical security measures like locks, security, and lighting to details like having a gun policy at your practice for both employees and patients and active shooter training and insurance.

Marty Kobak, DPM passed away yesterday surrounded by family and friends. He was in practice from the '70s until a few years ago. He was active in both the Queens Division of the New York State Podiatric Medical Association, as well as rising to president of the Academy of Ambulatory Foot Surgery.

This is a patient three weeks post sodium hydroxide nail removal. She has no pain nor any drainage. X-rays are negative.

Kudos to Dr. Levy for leading the charge for podiatry to take the MBME back in the early ’70s. My son is attending podiatry school at Temple as a freshman this year and with him graduating from UCLA with a bioengineering degree with honors has made him competitive with any medical student anywhere. The current crop of podiatrists are super smart and need to be recognized for their hard work and brains. It is time the leaders of our profession make sitting for the MBME a priority. We have nothing to hide and should be proud to take on this challenge; our profession and our students deserve this.

RE: Long-Term Care Insurance Increases

Keep your eyes out regarding your long-term care Insurance policy. In today’s mail, I received a letter from MassMutual Insurance company regarding my LTC insurance policy. They informed me that my monthly rate is increasing 25.98% for 2022 and 25.99% in 2023 and 25.98% for 2024, effectually more than doubling the premium cost.
If you are young and able to “shop for a new policy,” you might want to consider this, if you notice these changes coming your way.
