PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
WA Podiatrist Named "Boss of the The Year"

Dr. Terry Hess was one of three Boss of the Year award winners for 2013, an awards event organized by the Thurston County Chamber of Commerce and Express Employment Professionals, an Olympia staffing agency. Hess started his medical career as a pharmacist; then returned to study podiatry at the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco; then did his residency at Lakewood Regional Medical Center in Southern California, Kaiser in Portland; then did a fellowship at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Hess, 51, said he’s smart enough to know what he’s good at and not good at, and for those areas that are not his strength, he has hired accordingly, putting other people in charge. “They have that sense of ownership,” he said, adding that his staff meets weekly to talk about goals and go over issues. His approach to managing was cited in his Boss of the Year award, including input from business students at Saint Martin’s University, who interviewed nominees and shared their data with a selection committee.

SammyEHR v6.1 Receives ONC-ACB Certification

ICS Software, Ltd.’s SammyEHR v6.1 has been tested and certified under the Drummond Group's Electronic Health Records Office of the National Coordinator Authorized Certification Body (ONC-ACB) program. This EHR software is compliant in accordance with the criteria adopted by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Drummond Group’s ONC-ACB certification program certifies that EHRs meet the meaningful use criteria for either eligible provider or hospital technology. In turn, healthcare providers using the EHR systems of certified vendors are qualified to receive federal stimulus monies upon demonstrating meaningful use of the technology – a key component of the federal government’s push to improve clinical care delivery through the adoption and effective use of EHRs by U.S. healthcare providers.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) (CLOSED)
From: Jane Suval, DPM

This child needs a work up by a neurologist and occupational therapist for Autism spectrum disorder. One in 88 children (mostly boys - 3 out of 4), are diagnosed for this developmental disorder. I'm tired of hearing the parents of these kids in a quandary because their orthopedist or podiatrist recommended surgical intervention. Obviously, you can't make the diagnosis, but toe walking is a problem with the sensory system.

Children are uncomfortable in your office because of the bright lights. They can't sit for long times without running away (which you can attribute to any 2 year old), and they often take off their shoes because they need to feel the ground to be comfortable. A good OT will give the parent a host of exercises once they get the diagnosis.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Marc Katz, DPM

It is my experience that many doctors live in a box and they are either scared to get out of the box or they just don't know how.

One box is EBM. Everything we each do in real practice does not revolve around EBM. Let's be real. EBM is about as flawed as the USPS. Does it  have its place? Absolutely. Do I rely on it? Sometimes. But there is much more to treating a patient than what we learned in school and studies.

Another box is treating patients for...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP)
From: Bryan C. Markinson, DPM

ACFAS already has a a video featuring Dr. Mendecino, who states in the video that podiatric residency training is far superior to the training a foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon gets. While I personally think it is NOT a good idea to compare training of podiatrists in residency and fellowship with orthopedic foot and ankle surgeons, Dr. Mendecino at least states that there are very good quality foot and ankle orthopedic surgeons.

In the AOFAS video, the orthopedic surgeon seizes upon the fact that she is a medical doctor, and makes it seem that only they have general medical training. Unless you are in a fantasy land, this "medical doctor" distinction has far more weight with the general public than one may think, and it is my personal opinion that our patients ASSUME that we are MDs much more often than they know we are not.
