IA Podiatrist Leaves Podiatry to Pursue Her Passion as a Carpenter
A Winterset woman had a great career as a surgeon, but that field was not her passion. So Dr. Denise Mandi made a big change. “I’m a podiatrist so I was a foot and ankle surgeon…I eventually became the section chief of foot and ankle surgery at Broadlawns,” said Mandi. Denise Mandi gave up her medical career to enroll at Southwestern Community College in Creston. She is there to learn carpentry and building trades.

She and her male classmates are building a house over the school year. She says she enjoyed surgery but carpentry is her passion. “It always helped me as a surgeon that I was involved in wood working and I had done some construction…I was familiar with power saws and drills and things like that,” says Mandi. Upon graduation, Mandi plans work as a contractor and spend some time restoring old homes in central Iowa.

CO Podiatrist Discusses When to Replace Athletic Shoes
How often should you replace your workout shoes? It really depends on your body size, activities of choice, and preferred shoe type, says Jamie Mieras, DPM, a doctor of podiatric medicine and distance runner from Boulder, CO. Though as a general rule of thumb, she adds, you should replace your workout footwear “at least every six months, or every three to four months if you wear them four or more times per week.” For serious runners, that usually equates to replacing your shoes after 400 to 500 miles of use.

Larger people should replace their shoes more frequently, says Mieras, as should people who sprint frequently or do high-impact cross-training. And depending on the materials, lighter shoes may wear down faster. Bearing all that in mind, pay attention also to how your shoes feel when you put them on, regardless of how long you’ve had them. “When your shoes start feeling ‘flat,’ or when they lose that ‘makes-you-fly’ feeling,” says Mieras, “it’s time for a new pair.”

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Time to Upgrade from Dragon v10 to v12?
Can anyone advise whether we should upgrade from version 10 to 12, and is it true that version 10 users will not be able to get the upgrade price after the next new version of Dragon Medical is released?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
From: Arthur Gudeon, DPM, Robert E. Sherman, DPM
This may seem sort of primitive, but it works. What I do is put the x-rays up on my lighted view box, and with the flash turned off, take a photo with my SmartPhone and email it directly from there to the patient. They really come out very well.
Whenever we needed x-rays copied, we brought them to a large radiology practice near us, and they made the copies for us gratis. It didn't hurt that I had referred many patients to this office for MRIs over the years.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 |
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM
Dr. Raducanu, my role in my professional life is not to do your work for you. If you are interested in finding studies, there are thousands of published articles on functional medicine. It sounds to me as if you want "proof" that functional medicine complies with the evidence-based medicine model. While it is my experience that the EBM model is extremely flawed when it comes to healing patients, I understand that this is where your challenge comes from.
Any protocol-based approach to healing involves a multiple systems approach. It is not single agent, and the components of a functional medicine protocol cannot be extracted out individually and tested for "evidence". Just like we know that an apple is good for your health, a diet of only apples will kill you in time.
However, I find it interesting that on the Podiatry Today blog, in reference to the Moore Balance Brace, and in answer to Dr. Ritchie's assertion that there is no EBM for the Moore brace in fall prevention, you write that there are times you "just don't need EBM."

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP) |
From: Simon Young, DPM
Based on the training at NYCPM and personal experiences with foot and ankle practitioners and vascular practitioners, the podiatric resident should understand that when it comes to treating DM, ID, medical management, bedside manners, etc., our training is comparable, if not superior.
Podiatric residents in hospital settings don't take the lead and inform and impress on their fellow medical residents and demonstrate their pool of knowledge, which in these topics, is often deeper than their medical resident colleagues. The medical residents often need and seek the podiatry residents' recommendation and oftentimes, sad to say, it is not forthcoming. The podiatric residents shun away rather than get involved in a meaningful discussion to improve patient quality of care.
As an attending, I engaged the medical residents and they eagerly implemented many of my recommendations, provided their attending approved. What a great way to slowly incorporate into the medical community. We are changing the mindset of future medical practitioners.
