PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
OH Podiatrist Discusses Why Feet Can Smell Like Vinegar
Sour-smelling feet are a funky problem with several effective DIY solutions. “Feet smell like vinegar when they sweat too much, and the moisture interacts with bacteria on your skin,” explains podiatrist Joy Rowland, DPM. “The bacteria actually eat your sweat, and this creates an acidic byproduct that smells like vinegar.”
|
Dr. Joy Rowland |
For most people, the right foot self-care methods should do the trick. But if you’re not happy with your results, Dr. Rowland says it might be time to visit a podiatrist. “Podiatrists can recommend prescription products that reduce the sweat and bacteria. They can also determine if the vinegar foot odor is the result of something else, so you can address it with the right treatment.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Five Trends for Health Systems in 2023
Adaptability and flexibility underscore nearly every major trend facing the healthcare industry in 2023.
3) Delayed screenings - During the COVID-19 pandemic, seemingly healthy patients were more likely to skip routine screening exams because they did not feel comfortable entering clinical settings, or they were explicitly discouraged from coming in for check-ups. Mammograms, colonoscopies, and prostate screenings (just to name a few) were not performed. Now, as patients return for check-ups, the consequences of these missed exams are being noted. We are diagnosing increasing numbers of advanced-stage cancers, heart disease, diabetes, and other diseases that would have been more successfully treated had they been detected sooner.
Around the world, these consequences will be widespread. The number of severely ill patients will rise. CT scans, MRI studies, biopsies, and other advanced-care measures will be needed with greater frequency. More aggressive medical and surgical therapies will be needed – and at a higher cost. Healthcare facilities will face increased strain, specialty drug prescriptions will escalate, and ensuring fair access to these limited resources will take center stage.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Reimbursement for Orthotics
We have had so much trouble with Medicare reimbursement for orthotics in the second half of 2022. L3010 RT KX and L3010 LT KX always got reimbursed until recently. Something changed and are we missing something with the modifiers? We are DME certified suppliers.
PM News Subscriber
Response: While you might be a DME certified supplier, are the orthotics that you are supplying going into a shoe that is attached to a leg brace? If not, the orthotics are not a covered service. It does not matter if you had gotten paid in the past.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) -PART 1A |
From: Connie Lee Bills, DPM
I have never collected more than the fee schedule allowed for the code, so if the co-pay is larger, I don’t collect the entire co-pay. I’m not an expert but I wouldn’t collect more when you know you’ll need to refund.
Connie Lee Bills, DPM, Mount Pleasant, MI

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) - PART 1B |
From: George Jacobson, DPM
I think the discussion is over-generalizing. It depends on the contracts. If the patient's contract says that the podiatry co-pay is $40, then in my opinion, if the allowed amount is less than $40, the patient still contractually pays $40. The co-payments are agreed upon by the patient when they sign the contract. They know what to expect. Their premiums are based on how much their deductible, co-pays, co-insurance, and maximum out-of-pocket they will be.
If I have a $250 co-payment for every visit to the ER, I pay $250, even if they tell me to go home and call a podiatrist for the ingrown toenail. The higher co-payments above the approved amount are how the insurance companies pay nothing and have shifted costs to the patients. But again, the patient knew these costs before signing the contract. We also knew this when we accepted a very low reimbursement plan, where the co-payment may be the only payment. The answer to this question depends on the contracts and should be asked of a healthcare attorney.
George Jacobson, DPM, Hollywood, FL
