PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
Fall is Next Tsunami in Healthcare: CA Podiatrist
Once dismissed as simply a part of aging, falling has become a growing public health crisis of near-epidemic proportions, posing challenges for policymakers, caregivers and adults of all ages. “This is the next tsunami of healthcare problems coming our way,” said Dr. David Griffin, a podiatrist and fall-prevention advocate with Kaiser Permanente Medical Group, who spoke at the Falls Prevention Summit sponsored by the White House Conference on Aging last spring.

The fast-growing toll from falling reflects the aging of boomers, and people living longer with chronic disease. But injuries caused by falls are not just affecting older people. Falls are the leading reason for emergency room injury visits by adults ages 45 to 64, just as they are for those 65 and older, according to data collected by the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s national injury-surveillance system.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
NJ Podiatry Join Expands Through Acquisition
Foot Health Centers in Cherry Hill acquired Moorestown Foot Specialist, expanding the 35-location-strong podiatry group in South Jersey. “Joining Dr. (Lawrence) Levine and Foot Health Centers is a wonderful arrangement for me and my staff, enabling us to grow and offer the latest procedures, while maintaining old-fashioned doctor-patient relationships,” said Dr. Ronald Barbella, formerly of Moorestown Foot Specialist.

Levine explained the Moorestown practice was acquired for both stock in Foot Health Centers and a commensurate, increased salary for Barbella. “Not all doctors are businesspeople, and today many of them are finding it too tough to handle all their expenses and the administrative aspects of running their businesses. Most are not large enough to qualify for vendor discounts,” Levine said. So he acquires practices in which doctors stay on and there is no purchase price.

EMPLOYEES AND THE LAW |
Employee Who Misused TX Podiatrist's Patient Info in Trouble Again
Ebony Shonte Echols was not happy with a patient — a commercial airline pilot — who complained about the heart clinic where she worked. So she sent his health information to the Federal Aviation Administration against his wishes, federal authorities said. Echols, 35, a former employee of State of the Heart Cardiology in Grapevine, agreed last week to plead guilty in the case, court records show. A federal judge has to formally approve the plea deal before it is official. She faces up to a year in prison and a maximum fine of $50,000.
Echols has a criminal record, according to Dallas County records. She received deferred adjudication in 2014 for fraud she committed while working for a podiatrist in Irving. In that case, Echols used a patient’s banking and personal information to pay her rent in 2011, court records show.

ACA UPDATE |
Affordable Care Act Takes Hits in Spending and Tax Bills
A massive spending and tax-break package approved by Congress Friday will delay several taxes under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and put a crimp on other healthcare reform outlays. What's coming to Obama's desk suspends an ACA tax on medical devices for 2 years. ACA opponents argued that the tax, originally scheduled to take effect in 2016, would stifle medical innovation, increase the cost of care, and eliminate jobs. The legislation also stiff-arms the ACA provision that imposes a 40% excise tax on employer-sponsored health plans deemed ultraexpensive. The start date has been postponed from 2018 to 2020.
Another casualty is an ACA tax on health insurers, which is suspended for 2017. ACA critics say the tax causes insurers to pass on the cost to consumers in the form of higher premiums. The ACA took other hits on the spending side. Most notably, the legislation prevents the Obama administration from using discretionary funds in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to offset any initial losses incurred by health insurers participating in ACA exchanges in the so-called Risk Corridor program.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY |
Improving the Performance of Medical Practice Staff - Part 2
2. Is there a plan for training and coaching your average performers to go from good to great?
If the answer is no, it's time to develop one. And it doesn't have to be complicated. Start by considering each employee's current knowledge and what you feel would build it. Assigning self-paced learning such as journal articles, e-newsletter reading, or webinars is a good start. Then, meet with each employee to discuss the kind of additional training, knowledge, or support he feels is needed, and set some goals and a budget for this in 2016. You'll find this conversation can be a great motivator, especially for staff who are less likely to take initiative, and those who may feel the need for your "permission" and a nudge to further their learning.

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: Gouty Tophus with Normal Uric Acid
I have a patient who is a middle aged man who went to the OR for removal of soft tissue mass over the 1st MTPJ. Intra-operative findings and path report supported gouty tophus. He claims that he has never had an acute gouty episode. His serum uric acid is normal. I can't say that I have ever seen this scenario. Am I alone?

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: 3D Printer
Is anyone using the OLT in-office scanner/3D orthotic printing system? I'm curious about the reliability and durability of the printer.
