IN Podiatrist Discusses Cold Weather Footwear
Michael Nirenberg, DPM, a podiatrist at Friendly Foot Care in Crown Point, recommends waterproof footwear for more protection from frostbite. “Dampness conducts cold. Wearing thick wool socks or two pairs of socks to get a layer of air increases insulation. This is especially important for people with diabetes, as the risks of severe consequences from frostbite are much higher.

A foot doctor in Portland was indicted earlier this month by a grand jury on charges of sex abuse of two female patients, and investigators believe there may be more victims, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) reported Monday. Brian M. Bowen, DPM, 49, is accused of fondling two women during exams at the podiatry practice Eastside Foot & Ankle, located in Portland.

Dr. Jacob's post points to an endemic problem that affects multiple specialties in medicine and millions of patients with different diseases including diabetes. His commentary is consistent with past commentary from many posters who point out problems, but don't provide solutions.
Over the past several months, I posted to support a bill on the congressional floor designed to roll back expected cuts in Medicare to physicians who perform office-based procedures. This affects numerous podiatrists. I'd be interested if any of the readers on this post responded to support that legislation. We are sometimes our worst enemy.
On the other side of the issue is the reality that the legislators who designed the healthcare system for the rest of us have an entirely different healthcare system they participate in that includes many benefits not available to the general public. Until legislators are forced to have the same health insurance through CMS that we all do, these problems will remain. It is interesting that following the last national election, a freshman congressman had put a proposal on the floor to exactly enforce that rule - Legislators must have the same insurance as the general public. Bottom line, the press never picked it up, and it died before it ever had a breath of fresh air.

At CCPM in San Francisco (1976-1980), we were taught biomechanics by the best in the West and we spent time in the mechanical orthotic lab learning how to prescribe and make foot orthotics for our clinic patients. I arrived at my opinions from this and my 41 years of private practice, and my experience both as a practicing podiatrist who prescribes and also often makes many of his own orthotics "in house". I was hands-on in the orthotic manufacturing industry business back in the 1980s as a co-founder and co-owner of a local orthotic lab where at its peak, we were manufacturing about 100 orders daily. I honestly think I personally applied more rearfoot acrylic posts than any one podiatrist in the country, but I could be wrong.
It is always frustrating when I see any patient that has poorly prescribed or poorly manufactured "custom prescription foot orthotics" irrespective of the profession who prescribed and the method of capturing the image of...

Richard Donela was a real gentleman and a wonderful podiatrist. I first met Rich when I was a resident in Boston. He would fly down from Vermont to do surgery with us at the West Roxbury VA Medical Center. When I finished my residency, he invited me to work with him and his wife, Barbara, in their Bennington, VT and North Adams, MA offices. He and Barbara were a truly dynamic duo. He would practice medicine and Barb would run the office. They did that for almost 45 years!
I learned so much from him both medically as well as how to run a practice. He was really one of those unsung heroes of our profession. He was an excellent caring practitioner who served and cared for his community, He will certainly be missed by his patients and by those of us who had the honor to know and work with him. My condolences to Barb, Eliza, and Nathaniel.
