ABPM to Represent U.S. at FIP 2023 World Congress
The American Board of Podiatric Medicine is pleased to announce that it has been selected to represent the United States at the Fédération Internationale des Podologues (FIP) at the World Congress of Podiatry, to be held in Malta in 2023. This event is the largest gathering of international podiatrists in the world, bringing representatives from 40 countries together, to engage with oral and poster presentations, interactive workshops, and an exhibitor hall of over 100 podiatric service providers from around the world.

NY Podiatrist Receives Inaugural Queens Division Rising Star Award
On December 15th, The Queens Division of the New York State Podiatric Medical Association (NYSPMA) surprised Board member Jacqueline L. Prevete, DPM with its inaugural Rising Star Award. In addition to receiving the plaque, Division president Carlos Silva, DPM and fellow Board member Arthur Gudeon, DPM presented a check for $500 to her.

Dr. Prevete completed her residency training at New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, with a focus on trauma and reconstruction. She is a member of the NYSPMA Board of Trustees. She is dual board certified by the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. In addition, she is a sub 3-hour marathoner.

ABIs Can Prevent Amputations in Diabetics: MS Podiatrist
According to medical professionals, diabetes sufferers risk higher rates of amputation and traumatic surgeries, which could be avoided in many cases. Thursday, those diagnosed with the illness learned how simple life changes and foot care can extend their lives and prevent limb loss. “I want all of you to treat your feet like you do your hands,” said Gerard Guerin, DPM. The podiatrist with the Foot & Wound Institute of the South urged the monthly Diabetes Class meeting in the Canton Library to focus on their feet to avoid ulcers and darkening of skin, which means a lack of circulation. These are conditions that can lead to limb loss.

“Unfortunately, we’re finding out that most of them had not had that simple test called an ABI,” said Guerin. “And we’re finding out that every three minutes you’re finding a black person who’s getting amputated in the United States.” Dr. Geurin recommends diabetics take the quick and simple ABI, a test that checks for narrowed arteries, which impacts blood flow.

US Foot and Ankle Specialists (USFAS) recently expanded with its recent acquisition of Rock River Foot and Ankle Clinic PC, adding seven podiatry offices in Watertown, Fort Atkinson, Kale Mills, Waterloo, Juneau, Whitewater, and Johnson Creek, Wisconsin.

Brent Yaeggi, DPM is a graduate of the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine (SCPMC) and completed his podiatric residency at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa. Greg Graglia, DPM received his doctorate from SCPMC before completing his residency at the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

6. Healthcare costs are on the rise
Healthcare is not immune to the forces of inflation. According to the National Business Group, healthcare costs are expected to rise by 6 – 6.5% in 2023.
Given the trends, medical practices will need to focus on efficiency in 2023. This not only includes looking at expenses, but other metrics that have a high impact on profitability, like patient no-show rates.

RE: The Passing of Peter C. Kelly, DPM
Dr. Peter C. Kelly, 93, passed away peacefully at home on December 13, 2022 surrounded by his loving wife and five children. Dr. Kelly attended the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine where he received his degree in podiatric medicine.

He completed his surgical residency at the Illinois College of Podiatry and was appointed Chief of the Podiatric Clinic for the City of Newark, NJ where he remained for over 40 years. He was a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and was board certified in foot and ankle surgery.
