PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES
Dermagraft Jump-Starts Diabetic Wound Healing: NE Podiatrist

Patients with diabetic foot wounds increasingly receive healing products that stem from an unusual source: foreskin from circumcised babies. Dr. Brad Copple, a podiatrist with Miller Orthopedic Specialists in Omaha, said he learned about Dermagraft while doing his residency training at Yale University six years ago. He applies roughly 350 packets of the product a year." The bottom line is, it's a good product,” Copple said. “It works.”

Dr. Brad Copple

Diabetic foot ulcers are “a time bomb” for patients, Copple said. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 68,000 people in 2009 lost feet or the lower part of legs because of diabetes. Copple said Dermagraft “jump-starts a wound to heal itself.” The product provides proteins, cells, and collagen, which are building blocks for human tissue, and stimulate the body's healing agents, summoning them to the wound.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Sherlock  Holmes Inspired Modern Footprint Forensics: UK Podiatrist

How Sherlock Changed the World, a new two-hour special about the world’s most legendary fictional detective, reveals the astonishing impact Holmes has had on the development of real criminal investigation and forensic techniques. From blood to ballistics, from fingerprints to footprints, Sherlock Holmes was 120 years ahead of his time, protecting crime scenes from contamination, looking for minute traces of evidence, and searching for what the eye couldn’t see.
Professor Wesley Vernon

Sherlock’s obsession with shoe print evidence inspired one of the most recent advances in solving crimes — gait analysis. “Forensic gait analysis was only used for the first time in 2001, so Sherlock Holmes was 120 years ahead of practice,” says Professor Wesley Vernon, a forensic podiatrist who used the technique to convict a killer.

E- HEALTH NEWS
Medical Apps Increasingly Valuable to Clinicians and Patients

2013 was a big year for the adoption of mobile medical applications by clinicians and consumers. It also saw the beginning of convergence between devices and apps used by clinicians and those used by consumers. A recent policy brief on mobile health by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, published in the journal Health Affairs, cited industry experts who predict the number of mobile health apps will increase by a rate of 25% a year for the foreseeable future.

Globally, 500 million consumers and healthcare providers will use a mobile health app within the next two years. By 2018, “half of the 3.4 billion mobile device users worldwide will download a health app,” according to the brief. Consumer pressure from these legions of smart-device owners is expected to drive healthcare system change, according to industry experts.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Duke Team Makes Big Stride in Growing Artificial Cartilage

A Duke research team has developed a better recipe for synthetic replacement cartilage in joints. Combining two innovative technologies that they each helped develop, lead authors Farshid Guilak, a professor of orthopedic surgery and biomedical engineering, and Xuanhe Zhao, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and materials science, found a way to create artificial replacement tissue that mimics both the strength and suppleness of native cartilage. Their results appear Dec. 17 in the journal Advanced Functional Materials.

Zhao proposed a theory for the design of durable hydrogels (water-based polymer gels), and in 2012 collaborated with a team from Harvard University to develop an exceptionally strong yet pliable interpenetrating-network hydrogel. “It’s extremely tough, flexible, and formable, yet highly lubricating,” Zhao says. “It has all the mechanical properties of native cartilage and can withstand wear and tear without fracturing.”

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Podiatrists as Members of Regional or State Medical Associations

I am in the process of trying to have podiatric physicians added as members of the Chattanooga Medical Society, a Tennessee Medical Association division; it has been difficult. They have asked me for any examples of regional or state medical societies that have podiatric physicians as members. I would love to hear of any examples around the country.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Brian Kiel, DPM

I have seen similar pain with various etiologies over the years. The response to a series of sclerosing injections (6-8) every 10-12 days has been exceedingly successful.

RE: Termination from MultiPlan Network
From: Billie Bondar, DPM

I have abruptly been terminated from being a provider of the Multiplan Network after many years of provider status for the many insurance companies this network covers. I bet I am not alone. This is Obamacare working to eliminate the little private medical offices, as we are sacrificial in its plan. If you have been terminated, speak up.

RE: Functional Medicine
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM

I offer this informative article to the profession. I understand that many will still dismiss it, but for those who are open-minded and interested in being the best doctor they can be, this article may change your practice and your life. It is about the experience of a "conventional vascular surgeon" with functional medicine.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1
From: Dan Klein, DPM

When it comes to children's orthotics, I believe that a podiatrist should consider the fact that as children grow, they will outgrow the initial device. That is why I chose Langer Orthotic Labs. They have a program whereby this fact is taken into account at the time of purchase, with insurance that allows for replacement of the original device. I have been very pleased with their program and quality of service. I've used this lab for over 15 years without any regrets.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
Hand Attached To Ankle In Emergency Procedure In China

A Chinese man had his right hand grafted to his ankle for more than a month following an accident. Xiao Wei, of China's Hunan province, severed his hand at work in November, the Metro reported. His co-workers were able to retrieve the hand, which doctors said they would be able to re-attach -- just not immediately. In order to keep the hand from dying, doctors grafted it to the man's ankle.

What's the ICD-10 Code for this?

"Besides ripping injuries, his arm was also flattened. We had to clear and treat his injuries before taking on the hand re-attachment surgery," a doctor said, according to the Daily Mail. Doctors were able to successfully re-attach the hand, and he is expected to regain full use of the appendage.
