| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
5 Ways to Implement AI in Your Practice
Given the growing awareness of how powerful and useful artificial intelligence (AI) can be, healthcare organizations have good reason to try to leverage its vast capabilities. But figuring out how exactly to use this cutting-edge technology to address podiatric care-specific needs is no small feat. As your practice implements AI, there are five key steps to take in order to make sure that technology simplifies this transition.
Step 1: Make sure your adoption of AI has a specific objective
First of all, it’s crucial to have a clearly defined objective that will drive your implementation of AI. Because AI’s potential is so wide-ranging, it’s important to have a specific problem that you want to solve. If you aim to bring the power of AI to the world of podiatric care, then your main objective should also be specific to podiatric care.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A | |
I’m totally saddened and devastated at the loss of my awesome personal friend SuEllen! We’ve been close ever since we met over 45 years ago, when she was a super pharmaceutical rep for Pedinol Laboratories. She subsequently purchased Gordon Laboratories with her husband, David, when its owner retired. I was there celebrating with them when their son Andrew was born… what a beautiful family!
SuEllen was one of the most ardent and active supporters of our profession and its students, along with her close friend Kim, from McClain Laboratories. And they frequently exhibited at conferences together, like the upcoming NYSPMA Clinical Conference next month, where they were right up front as soon as you walked into the exhibit hall.
It's just heartbreaking. SuEllen will be so, so missed! My deep sympathy and condolences to her wonderful family, and after her tough last three years, may my friend finally now R.I.P.

RE: The Passing of SuEllen Dercher
Condolences to David and family. SuEllen was a caring friend. Gordon Labs routinely donated products when I was the volunteer podiatrist for the Denver Rescue Mission. Rest in Peace.
Michael J. Schneider, DPM, Denver, CO
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to family, friends, and those who worked with SuEllen Dercher. While we shared work experiences, we also shared a love of cuisine and fun, friendly talk. She was an honest, hardworking woman, proud mother, and a great friend. She will be missed with love.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) | |
From: Stephen M. Pribut, DPM
Dr. Purdy raises a provocative critique of Medicare, arguing that it is fiscally unsustainable and fundamentally flawed in design. However, his suggestion that individuals would be better off saving and investing the money that goes toward Medicare taxes is deeply flawed and fails to address the realities of healthcare costs, financial behavior, and the role of social safety nets. Furthermore, the increasing privatization of Medicare through Medicare Advantage plans has introduced additional challenges, including denials of care, administrative burdens, and profit-driven practices that harm both patients and practitioners. Let's examine these issues in depth.
Medicare's Purpose and Evolution
Medicare was created in 1965 to address a dire need: millions of older Americans lacked access to affordable healthcare. Before Medicare, the private market largely failed to serve this population, leaving many seniors without...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC EDUCATION) - PART 1A | |
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM
Nothing will improve until the mindset of CPME changes. They are living in the past and cannot see the future. We need to demand that CPME seek a more complete medical education. The colleges don't seem to want to do that. Case in point: The Illinois Association of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery (ILAPPS) - formally the IPMA, has run into a brick wall with the Scholl College at Roseland Franklin University (RFU), which includes the Chicago Medical School. We asked them to allow the podiatry students to take additional courses with the medical students. RFU refused. It will take CPME to force the issue. This is the only way we will see a long-term modernization of podiatric medical education.
Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM, Schaumburg, IL

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC EDUCATION) -PART 1B | |
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM
No, Dr. Ribotsky, the answer is not money. Real money is made in business, not the "business of medicine". People go into podiatry because they wish to impact lives in a positive manner. They go into podiatry because they wish to do surgery. They choose podiatry because it brings respect. They choose podiatry because they have an interest in science. They may choose podiatry as an alternative to other healthcare professions for a variety of reasons. Guaranteeing $400,000 or more annual income is not the reason to enter medicine. Many, if not most, podiatrists (according to surveys, including PM News) do not earn $400,000 a year.
The “complaints” regarding the practice of podiatry are generally no different from the “complaints” of our medical colleagues. Yes, money is important. And having money is nice. However, as Sir William Osler so well noted, that while you entered this profession to earn a living, generating money must always be a secondary concern. This may be difficult in today’s world, but ethically medicine is still a calling and not a business first profession.
Allen M. Jacobs, DPM, St. Louis, MO

RE: Kudos to AmerX Corp.
From: David S. Wolf, DPM
Many thanks to Jennifer Creel, Executive Assistant at AmerX Corp, who has consistently donated their slightly outdated inventory of Amerigel Wound Care Products to our 3 charity clinics in Houston.
