ABPM Welcomes Class of 2022 Diplomates
The American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM) has welcomed 296 Doctors of Podiatric Medicine to its 2022 Class of Diplomates. The ABPM reports that this year’s pass rate was 86%. The Board tested 345 applicants nationwide during this testing cycle. These results continue a longstanding trend among our classes of diplomates, comparable to allopathic and osteopathic counterparts, who demonstrate pass rates in the range of 80 to 90 percent each year.
|
Dr. Lee Rogers |
“We are so excited to welcome our Class of 2022 to the American Board of Podiatric Medicine,” said Board President Lee C. Rogers, DPM. “Each of these doctors can look forward to a lifetime of advantages and benefits incumbent upon achieving their Board-Certified status. ABPM Diplomates represent the very best of our profession and we look forward to our partnership with each, and every, member of the Class of 2022.”

FOOTWEAR IN THE NEWS |
NY Podiatrist Recommends New Balance Walking Shoe
If you are looking for a pair of walking shoes built to last, splurging on a good pair of walking shoes is a good idea. While there are many luxury brands to look into, New Balance (which has been making shoes for decades) is a great brand to stick with, according to New York-based board-certified podiatrist and foot surgeon Bruce Pinker, DPM. Sure, New Balance has a variety of shoes to choose from, but if you are looking for a pair that can handle just about everything, this is the shoe to snag.
|
Dr. Bruce Pinker |
“While this is a running sneaker, it is excellent for walkers,” says Dr. Pinker. “It provides cushioning, shock absorption, a stable heel counter, and a mesh design in the toe box. These features help prevent excessive moisture buildup and reduce the onset of Athlete's foot fungus (tinea pedis), toenail fungus (onychomycosis), and plantar warts.”

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE ADVANTAGE FRAUD) - PART 1A |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
Unfortunately, Dr. Rosenblatt is correct. There, no doubt, is a two-tiered system of justice in this country. That does not mean we need to sit back and accept it as it appears, though many consumers and providers have. Dr. Rosenblatt and his family have had a similar experience that many of us have had with insurance companies, whether they deal with long-term care, health, life, disability, homeowners, auto, and all the various types of insurance.
This issue, however, is a bit different. As opposed to these nefarious practices dealing with individual consumers who have little practical recourse, the Part C Medicare contractors have a contract and fiduciary duty to report audit results accurately and not...
Editor's note: Dr. Kesselman's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE ADVANTAGE FRAUD) |
From: W. David Herbert, DPM, JD
I have experienced the two legal justice systems that Dr. Rosenblatt identified in his posting. After I passed the bar in 1987, I began working with an attorney physician. He went to med school after being an attorney for a number of years. To obtain a lot of litigation type experience, he suggested that I become a parole board attorney. A parole board attorney was hired by the state of California as an independent contractor on a case-by-case basis. As this type of attorney, I represented inmates who were seeking a date to be paroled; they had an indefinite sentence. Most of them had been convicted of murder. Their files usually contained more than a thousand pages, including trial transcripts, psych report, etc. The board meetings lasted 3 hours, basically a mini trial. I engaged in over 300 of these in a little over a year.
Virtually all of these inmates had over-worked public defenders representing them. Many of them were convicted of murder when at the most, they were guilty of manslaughter. That is, they were over charged and over convicted. Many times their sentences were the result of a plea bargain. Obviously, if they could have afforded a competent defense attorney, they would not have been my client! Yes, there is a different justice system if you can afford it!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS ( PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS) |
From: Philip Radovic, DPM
Most of my HAV surgical patients are active and employed. They are interested in "little downtime." If they have bilateral deformities, they prefer to have one done at a time when informed. They understand the difference between two limited episodes of recovery vs. a more restrictive one-time recovery. It allows more freedom, mobility, and less stress. They are generally more productive.
In general, I restrict bilateral procedures to younger healthy patients, where temporary immobility is more tolerable due to agility and other youthful advantages, and of course which procedure is indicated. Performing unilateral vs. bilateral HAV surgery should come down to what's best for the patient, not the economics for us or the insurance company.
Philip Radovic, DPM, San Clemente, CA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RESIDENCY NEWS) |
From: John M. Giurini, DPM
I would like to point out two inadvertent photo omissions. Drs. Tom Lyons and Adam Landsman were inadvertently omitted from the montage of past residents, current attendings, and past attendings who have significantly contributed to the education, training, and success of the BIDMC program over its 50 year history. My sincere apologies to both of these outstanding clinicians and individuals.
