INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Aussie Podiatrist is Coach of Olympic Champion Hurdler

Olympic champion Sally Pearson is breaking new ground in her bid to again be the world’s fastest hurdler, injury-free and happy. Pearson and new coach Ash Mahoney are 13 weeks into a new partnership. In his first interview since taking the job, Mahoney said he was inspired and deeply motivated by the challenge of guiding Pearson towards the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. A coach, podiatrist, and expert in lower limb injuries, Mahoney has been a consultant to the hurdler since she stormed into the national team more than a decade ago.

(L-R) Ashley Mahoney and Sally Pearson

Mahoney, the father of two and former hurdler himself, is a track and field junky who is in awe of Pearson's professionalism and ability to will herself beyond the point of exhaustion. Every week he gains a close-up view of the 28-year-old as she endures lactic acid levels that would floor mere mortals, only to haul herself off the ground for one more set. “You’d expect that from an Olympic champion,” Mahoney said.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS
Bret Ribotsky: What are the overriding concepts that doctors need to know about marketing?

Dr. Len Schwartz

Len Schwartz: Every practice needs to really focus on the outward take of their practice. This is what I call the look, sound, and feel that your patients notice. Keep in mind that the goal is to get patients to stay, pay, and refer new patients. And as scientists and true marketers (all private practitioners are), you must test, track, and measure each action that you do.

HEALTHCARE NEWS - PART 1
Nighttime Risky for Gout

Among patients with gout, the risk of an attack was more than doubled during the night compared with the daytime hours, researchers reported. During the first 8 hours of the day, from midnight until 8 a.m., the odds ratio for a gout flare was 2.36 (95% CI 2.05-2.73 P<0.0001), compared with the hours of 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., according to Hyon K. Choi, MD, DPH, of Boston University, and colleagues.

Risk was also somewhat high in the evening hours of 4 p.m. until midnight, with an OR of 1.26 (95% CI 1.07-1.48, P=0.005), Choi and colleagues reported online in Arthritis and Rheumatology. Choi's group prospectively recruited 724 patients with gout for an Internet-based, case-crossover study in which patients acted as their own controls. This study design has been shown to be useful in evaluating the effects of short-term risk factors on outcome events.

HEALTHCARE NEWS - PART 2
Many Kids with Open Bone Breaks Can Heal Safely Without Surgery

Many children who sustain so–called open bone fractures in the forearm or lower leg can, and do, heal safely without surgery, according to the results of a small study led by investigators at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Open fractures occur when the broken bone protrudes through the skin, causing a puncture wound.

The study, published ahead of print in the Journal of Children’s Orthopaedics, shows that when the wound is small – less than 1/2–inch in diameter – and the surrounding tissue is free of visible contamination with dirt or debris, children heal well (via closed reduction) on their own. The results, based on analysis of outcomes among 40 pediatric patients ages 4 to 16 with such clean open–bone fractures treated nonsurgically at Johns Hopkins between 2000 and 2013, showed normal bone healing and no long–term complications.

INTERNATIONAL HEALTHCARE NEWS
African Parasitic Worm Found in Man's Foot

A parasitic worm that grows up to a meter long has been found in the foot of a Melbourne man who is believed to have been living with it for years. The parasite, which usually travels through the walls of its victims' intestines and digs through their body to try to exit through a painful blister on their skin, was recently diagnosed in a Sudanese migrant who had been living in Australia for four years.

An x-ray of the parasitic worm in the foot of a Melbourne man.

Dr. Jonathan Darby, an infectious diseases physician at St Vincent's Hospital, said the 38-year-old man sought help for a swollen foot that had been painful for about a year, prompting doctors to wonder if he had stood on something that had become stuck in his foot or had caused an infection. But to their surprise, an X-ray showed what appeared to be two pieces of curled up "Guinea worm" or Dracunculiasis medinensis in his ankle and foot. Despite its ability to grow to great lengths, the two pieces of worm were only several centimetres long, probably because it had died and started to degenerate inside the man. It was surgically removed and the man made a full recovery.

ICD-10 UPDATE
House Leaders Back ICD-10 Deadline, Seek Hearings on Readiness

Two Republican House committee leaders announced plans to hold a status hearing next year on ICD-10 preparations in a statement that supports—although somewhat tepidly—the current CMS timeline to implement the diagnostic and procedure codes next fall.

House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI), and House Rules Committee Chairman Pete Sessions (R-TX) said Upton's committee “has been working with CMS to ensure that the Oct. 1, 2015 implementation is achieved and is prepared to have a hearing on the issue in the new year.”
