Canadian Federation of Podiatric Medicine Elects New President
At the recent convention and annual general meeting of the Canadian Federation of Podiatric Medicine, held in Mississauga Ontario, Dr. Brian Johnson, a Prince Edward Island podiatrist, was elected to the position of president. Johnson is a graduate and faculty member of Salford University, England. He was recruited in the 1980s to relocate to Canada to open Canada's first podiatry school in Toronto.

As a practicing podiatrist for almost 30 years, Margolin has observed an alarming trend among his patients: healthcare has advanced, but the overall health of his patients has declined.

Disease states like cancer, obesity, and diabetes have all been on the rise at a rapid rate. In response, Margolin has created the Take Back Your Health Now Podcast. On the show, he interviews top doctors, athletes, trainers, and entrepreneurs to try to find the real answers to health's holy grail.

Running Actually Lowers Inflammation in Knee Joints: Study
Running may also slow the process that leads to osteoarthritis. New research from BYU exercise science professors finds that pro–inflammatory molecules actually go down in the knee joint after running. In other words, it appears running can reduce joint inflammation. “It flies in the face of intuition,” said study co-author Matt Seeley, associate professor of exercise science at BYU. “This idea that long–distance running is bad for your knees might be a myth.”
In a study recently published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology, Seeley and a group of BYU colleagues, as well as Dr. Eric Robinson from Intermountain Healthcare, measured inflammation markers in the knee joint fluid of several healthy men and women aged 18–35, both before and after running. The researchers found that the specific markers they were looking for in the extracted synovial fluid – two cytokines named GM–CSF and IL–15 – decreased in concentration in the subjects after 30 minutes of running. When the same fluids were extracted before and after a non–running condition, the inflammation markers stayed at similar levels.

| ACA UPDATE | |
Obamacare Repeal Could be Biggest 2017 Tax Cut for Wealthy
The big winners in Republican plans to repeal Obamacare are likely to be the rich. Rescinding the Affordable Care Act means not only taking away health coverage from some 20 million Americans. It also means scrapping two big tax increases Democrats imposed on the wealthy to help pay for it all.
Republicans are likely to ax those taxes on the earnings and investments of those making more than $250,000 — and not replace them — in what some predict will prove the biggest tax cut of next year. “It means that there’s a large, permanent tax cut before we even get to tax reform,” said Ryan Ellis, former tax policy director for Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform.

10 Collection Tactics for High-Deductible Patients - Part 4
Patient collections are much more than collecting $10 co-pays: those days are long gone. Patients are paying a greater percentage of what you get paid and will be paying an ever higher percentage in the years to come. Smart and consistent patient collections tactics must be a part of every practice's financial strategy. Though the rate of healthcare spending may have slowed, the share absorbed by patients has done the opposite. Here are a few basics for improving your patient collections.
4. Give patients the option: For patients who have a history of 'forgetting' co-pays or are frequent no-shows, offer the option of either pre-paying a nominal non-refundable deposit or rescheduling their appointment until they are ready to pre-pay. Patients adjust to this policy, and our late-cancel and no-show rates have declined.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 | |
RE: Kudos for New Residency Director
From: Stacey Baptiste, DPM
I would like to congratulate Jason E. Feinberg, DPM on establishing the first podiatry residency training program at Huntington Hospital at Northwell Health, Huntington, NY. Dr. Feinberg has been the Chief of Podiatry at Huntington Hospital for the past four years and worked diligently during this time to have a residency program established and approved by the CPME. This was an even greater task to accomplish as this would be the first residency training program of any medical specialty established at Huntington Hospital at Northwell Health.
Approval for three PM&S-36 residents was received earlier this year, and the first round of residents started their training September 1, 2016. Dr. Feinberg's program has been met with great success and he looks forward to future growth of the program as the hospital expands to meet a growing, challenging and diverse population.
Stacey Baptiste, DPM, Huntington, NY

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 | |
From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH
Dr. Dave Williams poses a question about pharmacogenetics. His question is very timely in that the medical genomic revolution is now underway, incited by the identification of the human genome more than a decade ago. Yet virtually nothing regarding genomics is found in the podiatric medical literature and little emphasis is provided on medical genomics in the podiatric medical education establishment. Genomics involves the interaction of multiple genes with the environment and is relevant to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of many of the most common diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, cancer, and likely also to many podiatric medical conditions (eg., hallux valgus, club foot, etc.).
Also included is pharmacogenomics which identifies a drug dose specific to an individual rather than providing the same drug dose to all individuals (i.e., personalized or precision medicine). The time is long overdue for the podiatric medical profession to identify its role in medical genomics - the sooner the better.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEW QUICK POLLS) | |
From: Dan Klein, DPM
Regarding podiatry school vs. medical school, Dr Tomczak, MD, DPM, EdD points out that 11 out 12 students chose DO school over podiatry while at the Des Moines school. This speaks volumes as to the preference of students and their thoughts about podiatry school and the profession! Having accomplished acquiring an MD degree, Dr. Tomczak, also speaks volumes as to his goals in life and his self-image.
I believe that podiatrists in general, given the opportunity, would choose the MD degree over the DPM degree in today's world. Having spent over 40 years as a podiatrist, the opportunities for advancement and placement in society were limited as a podiatrist compared to those of the MD. Even the military offered little advancement for rank for DPMs when compared to the MDs or DOs. Podiatrists have chased for recognition from Congress only to fail time and time again. I believe the dual degree should be offered to all podiatry students.
Dan Klein, DPM, Ft. Smith, AR

From:Elliot Udell, DPM
To paraphrase the saying: "from Dr. Michaels' mouth to God's ears." It would be a blessing if the Trump administration did away with MACRA, PQRS, Meaningful Use stage 3, and any other costly, time-consuming rules that the federal government has laid on the backs of healthcare providers.
This past week, I went to a physical therapist to get treated for a muscle spasm in my back. Had I not known where he was coming from I would have resented all of the irrelevant questions he had to ask me. He sheepishly apologized by letting me know that it was PQRS. As a patient, I felt that I would have preferred him spending more time evaluating and treating my back than on asking me a whole bunch of silly questions. I experience the same thing when I see my internist.
Many of these regulations were designed as part of the federal stimulus package to create jobs ala paid federal monitors, outside corporations selling us expensive software, etc. The only ones not taken into account with all of these extra tasks are the patients. Hopefully, the next administration will understand this.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY
