Prosecutors Call on IN Podiatrist To Identify Bloody Footprint in Murder Trial
The murder trial of defendants Kailie Brackett and Donnell Dana continued Monday, with the state calling three witnesses to testify, including a podiatrist who claimed Brackett’s footprints match the ones found in blood at the apartment of the victim, Kimberly Neptune.
|
|
Dr. Michael Nirenberg |
Michael Steven Nirenberg, DPM focused on the footprints discovered at Neptune’s apartment, using prints and images of the defendant’s feet taken by law enforcement. After study, he claimed the prints at the scene bear a resemblance to Kailie Brackett’s, in the width of the foot. The defense questioned the field of forensic podiatry and pressed Dr. Nirenberg on whether the measurements would be altered depending on how thick the sock covering the foot was.

OH Podiatrist Discusses The Effect of Pregnancy on Feet
If a pre-pregnancy foot is like an ice-cream sandwich straight out of the freezer—sturdy, structured—one relaxed by relaxin is a sandwich left out in the sun. The hormone causes the ligaments and tendons in the foot and ankle to lose their rigidity and strength, so the foot tends to spread out, Alexandra Black, DPM, a podiatrist at Foot and Ankle Specialists of Central Ohio who co-authored a recent review of pregnancy-related foot changes, says.
|
|
Dr. Alexandra Black |
Throwing pregnancy weight on them only compounds the problems. “It leads to more of a flatter foot, a wider foot, and a longer foot,” Dr. Black said. According to the few small studies on the topic, pregnant feet, on average, go up by roughly half a shoe size and lengthen by 0.4 inches. It is a small consolation that this effect is most pronounced during first pregnancies, meaning that feet won’t grow indefinitely along with one’s brood.

6 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Using Section 179 Deductions
Pitfall #1: Not understanding parameters – Eligible property and annual limits
Practices may make mistakes by not fully understanding which types of property qualify for a Section 179 deduction. Section 179 is applicable only to assets used for business purposes. Failing to allocate assets properly can lead to improper deductions.
Eligible property for Section 179 may include:
-
Equipment, X-Ray, computers, fax machines, telephones, and other business property
-
Furniture and fixtures
-
Off-the-shelf-software that is used for business operations
-
Improvements to real-estate such as roofs, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning
Section 179 limits are updated annually, so it is important for practice owners to be aware of these limits and to plan accordingly.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) -PART 1 | |
From Ron Werter DPM
Dr. Kobak has written an in-depth article in PM Magazine about closing a practice. There is one item I have a question about: preserving the charts. When we all had paper charts, we could put them in boxes and take them home or have a company store them for 7 years Now, most of us have an EHR which is administered by a vendor. What is the best way of retaining those charts? Are there known problems with asking the vendor to copy all the data and allow it to be accessible if you no longer have their program.
Ron Werter, DPM, NY, NY

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) - PART 2 | |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM, Mark Spier, DPM
The whole point of my last letter was to point out that we, as individuals, are partly if not totally responsible for setting our own self-worth. If we don't, who will? If we podiatrists, as Dr. Secord states, are allopathic physicians, then it’s time we start acting like ones.
Can you find me an MD or DO who will work for the kind of dollars DPMs line up and stab each other in the back to sign up for? And that is the crux of the problem. We think if we sign up for less, then we can become invaluable to the patient and carrier. In fact, that’s exactly the opposite of what happens. The carrier realizes we are so dependent on them, we become so desperate to retain their lifeline, that they pay us less and less. So who’s really responsible for this? Each of us!
Paul Kesselman, DPM, Oceanside, NY
I’m asking if the antipathetic allusion to allopathy is an anonymously announced alliterative allegory? Or is it not necessarily nuanced enough to notice now?
Mark Spier, DPM, Reisterstown, MD
