MD Podiatrist to Retire as APMSA ED & CEO
APMA Executive Director and CEO James R. Christina, DPM, has announced that he will retire on March 31, 2024. Dr. Christina has been executive director since 2015, and previously served as director of Scientific Affairs for a decade. Following Dr. Christina's retirement in March, Chief Business Officer Denis Russell, CPA, CAE, will serve as interim CEO. The APMA Board of Trustees will form a search committee to select a permanent CEO.
|
|
Dr. James Christina |
Among APMA's many achievements under Dr. Christina's leadership are the passage of legislation placing podiatrists at the VA in the physician and surgeon pay band; the rebranding of the organization as the result of a major brand audit; a comprehensive response to the COVID-19 public health emergency and its impact on members; the launch of an Online Learning Center; the restructuring of senior staff to add an executive team; and the recent sale of APMA's headquarters building.

FL Podiatrist Discusses Trevor Lawrence's Injury
For the average person recovering from a high ankle sprain, it could take 6 to 8 weeks. For a professional athlete like Trevor Lawrence, one podiatrist says the recovery time could be cut in half. Philip Adler, DPM is a podiatrist in Jacksonville. Though not treating the Jacksonville quarterback, Dr. Adler believes it's possible we could see Lawrence return to the field soon.
|
|
Dr. Philip Adler |
Doctor Adler says the challenge will likely be to keeping the quarterback mobile without further injuring the ankle joint. He explains what happens to the body when experiencing a high ankle sprain. "You're not injuring those ligaments per se. Instead, what you're doing is you're injuring the ligament that binds two bones, the tibia and fibula together. That's what happens typically when the foot is planted flat on the floor and then there's an internal or external rotation of the leg above it."

OCM™ Wound Platform Shows Antibacterial Activity in Porcine Wound Model
Omeza®, a regenerative skincare company that develops marine-based therapies for the treatment of chronic wounds, recently presented in vivo data showing that OCM™ alone significantly reduced methicillin-resistant staphylococcus (MRSA) aureus and pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) bacterial counts and accelerated the formation of new tissue in MRSA-infected wounds, outperforming a comparative treatment and a control group.
|
|
Dr. Windy Cole |
“These in vivo data constitute an important finding that may have significant clinical implications for the management of many wound etiologies, such as burns, diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, and pressure ulcers,” said Windy Cole, DPM, adjunct professor and Director of Wound Care Research at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. The in vivo study of OCM™ supports these foundational studies and demonstrates that a specific therapy—OCM™—confers these antimicrobial benefits in porcine wounds, and the potential is likely in human wounds, as well,” Dr. Cole said.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
8 Steps to Follow When Firing Practice Employees
Here are 8 things you must do to fire a practice employee.
7. Include a witness.
-
Never fire someone alone. The witness should also take notes about the discussion in case a lawsuit is filed later on.
-
Also, keep terminations private. Do not broadcast anything on social media about the employee, even if they are attacking the practice.

| CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Matrix Biopsy
I have a patient with melanonychia of recent onset. It is unclear as to benign or malignant. I will be doing a nail avulsion and biopsy of the matrix. What code do I use for diagnosis? I am thinking it should be the skin lesion – behavior unspecified code, and I am unable to locate that code. Regarding the appropriate CPT code for the procedure, I am thinking of using the biopsy code, CPT 11755. Is that correct?
Iowa Codingline Subscriber
Response: a patient has melanonychia and a nail avulsion and a biopsy of the nail matrix will be performed on the affected toe. The most appropriate ICD-10-CM code would be D49.2 which is defined as Neoplasm of unspecified behavior of bone, soft tissue and skin.
With respect to the appropriate CPT code, I find the most appropriate CPT code to be CPT 11755 which is defined as the following: Biopsy of nail unit (e.g. plate, bed, matrix, hyponychium, proximal and lateral nail folds) (separate procedure). If the toenail is avulsed to gain access to the targeted area, CPT 11730 is a Column 2 code to CPT 11755 the Column 1 code within the CCI edits and is not separately reimbursable.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS ARTICLES) | |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
First, thank you to all of those who may have called, emailed, or texted with regards to the recent article in the current Podiatry Management on a retrospective view of forty years in podiatry. Much of what we have been talking about for the last four decades is the attempt to be treated as equals to our allopathic and osteopathic colleagues. The last portion of the recent article discussed righting the ship just as many PM News postings complain about Medicare Replacement Plans paying 30 and 40 cents on the dollar.
Perhaps there are two other wake-up calls worth reviewing. An interesting story in Becker’s Health Care cited more major orthopedic groups leaving those "A" plans, citing universal denial of procedures as one of their chief reasons for leaving. For more on the Becker's story...
Editor's note: Dr. Kesselman's extended-length letter can be read here.
