NY Podiatrist Discusses Surgery for Flat Feet in Children
“Surgery may be an option when flat feet are associated with pain or decreased function and don’t respond to such conservative treatment as braces, stretching, physical therapy, or shoe orthotics,” says Emilio Goez, DPM, Chief of Surgery at St. Barnabas Health System (SBH). “With pediatric patients, we try to hold off on surgery until foot growth is complete (by around age 10).”
|
|
Dr. Emilio Goez |
“The success rate for children ... is very high,” says Dr. Goez. “By restoring the arch, we can prevent opposite knee and back pain from occurring years later. We also do this type of surgery with adults with flat feet, but it takes longer for them to heal and the rate of success is not as high. Our goal with children is that they do so well that we never see them again.”

CO Podiatrist Provides Tips for Prevention of Cracked Heels
When you’re experiencing cracked heels, don’t just immediately tend to your feet—grab a water bottle, fill it up, and start guzzling. “Make sure you’re drinking enough water,” says Garrett Moore, DPM, a podiatrist at UCHealth Stapleton Foot and Ankle Center. “Your skin can lose around a liter of water throughout the day—more in dry climates—so keeping yourself hydrated goes a long way toward preventing or soothing dry, cracked skin,” he says.
|
|
Dr. Garrett Moore |
Whether you’re trying to prevent cracked heels or heal them, the solution is the same: stay moisturized. “Use a good moisturizer at least once a day, possibly more. While there are various moisturizers and barrier creams out there—and many reasons to use certain types—one of the biggest problems I run into with patients is lack of consistency,” Dr. Moore says. “Moisturizer needs to be applied to the feet daily—once in the morning and once at night before bed.

Wearing Wrong Running Shoes Can be a Recipe for Bunions: OR Podiatrist
Bunions can be particularly painful for runners, because running in the wrong shoes can exacerbate them, but also because they can lead to other foot problems. There may be a hereditary element to bunions, and having low arches, flat feet, or loose joints can increase your risk of developing them. But even ill-fitting running shoes can be to blame, says Ray McClanahan, DPM, a podiatrist at Northwest Foot & Ankle in Portland, Oregon.
|
|
Dr. Ray McClanahan |
Most running shoes have a tapered toe box (that is, they get narrower at the toe) as well as a slightly elevated heel. Wearing a running shoe with a significant drop (the height difference between the heel and forefoot often measured in millimeters) year after year can be a recipe for bunions, says McClanahan, who is a long-distance runner.

NY Podiatrist Discusses OTC Treatment of Ingrown Toenails
When you have an ingrown toenail, your feet won’t let you forget it. Typically caused by wearing too-tight shoes or cutting the nail too short or unevenly, an ingrown toenail is “a portion of the toenail that cuts into the skin surrounding a nail border, which can cause sharp pain, swelling, and even infection if bacteria enters the wound,” Jackie Sutera, DPM explained in an interview with Footwear News.
|
|
Dr. Jacqueline Sutera |
While Dr. Sutera warns that any sign of infection should be treated by a doctor immediately, there are a few over-the-counter remedies you can use to reduce pain and get your nail back on track when symptoms are less severe. Try a curve corrector to help align the nail. When the sides of a nail cut into the surrounding skin, increased curvature of the entire nail results. A small plastic brace, called a curve corrector, can be glued on top of the nail to help train it as it grows out.

Former MD Podiatrist Builds Ark for Florida Temple
When Dr. Maurice Aiken’s shul in Tampa, Florida, outgrew its original building and the High Holiday family services were moved into an adjacent church facility, Aiken became concerned that the new facility had no holy ark to hold the congregation’s Torah scrolls. Aiken, a longtime Pikesville podiatrist and Glyndon resident had relocated his family and his practice to Dunedin, Florida, in 2015, and joined Temple Ahavat Shalom.
|
|
Dr. Maurice Aiken and the Ark |
A self-taught carpenter who had built a deck and gazebo at his Glyndon home, Aiken’s ark was his first attempt at furniture-making. He surprised even himself with the results. “It turned out much better than I had anticipated,” he said. “It gave focus to the services, which really didn’t have a focus at the front. It’s the first thing you look up to. That’s where the most important thing is stored in every synagogue. It didn’t have that level of decorum and now it does. That felt great.”

CA Podiatrist Opines in Suit by Diabetic Inmate Who Lost Toe
Laddie Roebuck, a 59-year-old inmate in the St. Louis City Justice Center, had a toe amputated at the end of November because the jail medical staff allegedly hadn’t been adequately treating his diabetes, Roebuck has claimed in a federal lawsuit. On November 27, Roebuck filed a temporary restraining order, in an attempt to make sure the jail staff follows the care plan he was given at SLU Hospital.
|
|
Dr. Shelly Gath |
The restraining order includes a statement from podiatrist Shelley Gath, DPM who evaluated the medical documents on Roebuck’s care. Gath first noted that his diet is problematic and inconsistent with the diet required for diabetics. “The current diabetic tray provided would create hyperglycemia or high blood sugar levels on a regular basis,” Gath stated. “Medical records I reviewed reflect insufficient care of the diabetic ulcer on Mr. Roebuck’s foot,” Gath stated.

Strategies for Better Billing and Collections - Part 1
Here are some resolutions that can improve your billing and collections in the new year.
1. Resolve to educate your patients. - Insurance is complex and is getting more so. Physicians and their staff are now spending a lot of time on continuing education when it comes to billing. But patients could use a bit of schooling, too. Co-pays, deductibles, and other medical billing terminology can be a bit of a mystery to most people.
Consider printing a simple flyer that explains billing basics that can apply to any insurance plan. Direct patients toward the customer service number on the back of their insurance cards for more detailed questions.

Query: VA Parity by Title Only?
With the passing of the VA Provider Equity Act, which made podiatrists in the VA system equal with other physicians, parity in pay as well should have followed. This did not happen at my VA hospital. We were informed via email, without any explanation as to why, or even who, made the decision for no parity pay for podiatrists at my VA. My understanding is that VA podiatrists at other VA hospitals did, indeed, get parity pay increases. Can anyone shed light on this disparity?
