Pregnant Women (Even Royals) Shouldn't Wear High Heels: NY Podiatrist

Five months pregnant, four-inch heels, three dangerous scenarios. Those are the painful numbers behind the Duchess of Cambridge’s insistence on wearing high heels despite having a baby on board.

Dr. Isaac Tabari

"The risk of stress fractures, bursitis, and capsulitis are increased when a pregnant woman routinely wears heels," said Dr. Isaac Tabari of the NYC Podiatry Center of Excellence in Midtown. "Pregnant women should not wear high heels every day."

Holiday Season Requires Extra Care of Feet: APMA President

Americans spend just shy of 274 hours a year on shopping – or 45 minutes per day – according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ American Time Use Survey. It’s probably safe to say a good chunk of that time occurs during the holiday season. While much shopping takes place online, many people still head to stores, and those folks will be logging a lot of hours on their feet.
Dr. Frank Spinosa

“The National Retail Federation predicts that total holiday spending will be close to $32 billion this year,” says Dr. Frank Spinosa, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). “Shoppers should also spend a few dollars – and some time – caring for their feet. Our 2014 foot health survey indicates that just 25 percent of Americans regularly take care of their feet, but many holiday activities, such as shopping, preparing large meals, or even dancing require extra time on your feet.”

PROFESSIONAL DISCIPLINE
IA Podiatrist's License Fully Restored

Payment of a $1,000 fine to the Iowa Board of Podiatry has fully restored the medical license of Quad-City podiatrist Dr. James P. Licandro. Licandro was charged with practicing outside the scope of his profession. At the time, the state charged that he performed a biopsy on a lesion found on a patient's back. The doctor called the incident a misunderstanding, noting that he initially found the lesion on the patient's back and noticed a similar one on the person's ankle. He failed to record that, in his opinion, the two were related. According to a ruling dated Dec. 5, the state issued a notice that Licandro's license is "returned to its full privileges free and clear of all restrictions."

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
Naftin (Naftifine Hcl) Gel and Cream 2% Approved for Use with Pediatric Patients

Merz Dermatology, a division of Merz North America (U.S. affiliate of the global Merz Pharma Group) announced that Naftin ® (naftifine HCl) Gel 2% and Naftin ® (naftifine HCl) Cream 2% have received approval for the treatment of interdigital type tinea pedis in pediatric patients aged 12 to 17 years. This pediatric approval expands the previous labelling that indicated Naftin ® Gel and Cream 2% for use with patients over 18 years of age.

The approval of Naftin ® Gel and Naftin ® Cream 2% for use with pediatric patients is based on results from clinical trials involving four investigational sites and included 44 patients aged 12 years to 17 years, 11 months. The results indicate that patients treated with Naftin ® Gel 2% and Naftin ® Cream 2% experienced clinically significant cure rates when compared to placebo.

CODINGLINE CORNER
RE: ABN Question Regarding DME

I have received a few denials on therapeutic shoes and inserts for my advance beneficiary notices for not having the proper wording in box E of the ABN. Box E is part of the section beginning "Medicare does not pay for everything, even some care that you or your health care provider have good reason to think you need. We expect Medicare may not pay for the D below."

"D" is the description of the item in question.  "E" is the "Reason Medicare may not pay" box associated with "D". Please help if you know of the correct wording they are looking for in box E.

Trina, Office of Neil Kelley, DPM, Fortuna, CA

Response: That is correct. Your section "E" explanation has to be the specific reason you expect it will not be covered, usually referencing the Medicare policy guidelines. It cannot be a general "if Medicare does not pay, then ..." Example: "previous shoes received less than 12 months since the last pair." When in doubt, verify with the DME MAC for your region prior to ordering the shoes.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Kudos to Arthur Helfand, DPM
From: Richard B. Willner, DPM

There are some 250 former residents of Dr. Art Helfand. Yes, time has passed. 34 years for me. I wonder how many of us have taken the time to send a belated "thank you" to Dr. Helfand for creating the largest podiatry residency program at that time, and for choosing each of us?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL/LEGAL)
From: Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM

I suggest that you confirm the permeability of the product brand or generic material. Barrier products, like surgical masks, have various allowances for particulates, including bacterial organisms. Dental procedures are not typically required to have a sterile field, since most are "dirty procedures." The fact that the dental profession uses the material in reference to your intended use is not a wise one. So, I respectfully disagree with Dr. Block.

Try contacting Johnson & Johnson Barrier products. They might be helpful. Although "community standards" might be different, "standard of care" is your concern, right? If you get a case of osetomylitis or any other post-op issue, this might well be the first thing investigated. Be proactive and take the time to find out, or it may cost more time for you in the future.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Werner Strupp, JD

It is with a sense of deep personal loss that I read of the passing of a friend, of a person for whom the word "mensch" was coined, Dr. Werner Strupp. In the many years that we attended the House of Delegates together, but especially in the years where I was privileged to serve as Speaker of the House, he was always the person to whom we turned for his sage advice, his gentle handling in times of controversy, his superior intellect, and his prodigious memory. May his memory live on as an example of how we should live our lives in a world which is embroiled in hatred and controversy.
