Former IL Podiatrist, "Cookie Queen of Chicago", Publishes Cookbook
Each August, Mary DiSomma, DPM breaks out her KitchenAid and starts baking cookies for the holiday season. She needs a long runway to make a whopping 7,000 cookies—50 varieties in all—that she and her husband will put in tins and hand out as gifts to eagerly awaiting family and friends come December. The cookie recipes she uses have been in her family for generations and are the centerpiece of her cookbook, A Gift of Cookies: Recipes to Share with Family & Friends.
|
|
Dr. Mary DiSomma |
Dr. DiSomma, a former podiatrist, began working on her cookbook three years ago when the pandemic first hit. “My daughter had been asking me to get all our family recipes together so she wouldn’t lose them,” says DiSomma. “My practice was closed, so I used that time to organize all my recipes and bind them into simple books which I handed out to my family.” The response was so profuse that DiSomma knew she needed to create a printed cookbook that captured the magic of her vast collection of cookie recipes.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS)- PART 1 | |
From: Pete Harvey, DPM
Kudos to Dr. Kabbani for his astute actions. And, thank goodness for the patient's sake.
Many years ago, I excised a lesion plantar to the 2nd right metatarsal head. The lab result indicated a clear cell sarcoma. I referred him to MD Anderson. He did lose the 1st AND 2nd metatarsals, BUT, he is alive today, many years later.
Pete Harvey, DPM, Wichita Falls, TX

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS ( PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS) - PART 2A | |
From: Jeff Pinsky, DPM
In response to Dr. Wrotslavsky’s comment and referenced article in doing bilateral bunion surgery: I agree with Dr. Laps on discouraging having both feet done together. Being an old guy, and a very conservative surgeon, if I did a procedure involving any proximal metatarsal osteotomy, regardless of method of fixation, I had them NWB for about 4 weeks. Made it hard to do bilateral cases (for them, not me). Nothing to do with insurance reimbursement.
For those patients that pretty much insisted on both at the same session, even saying something along the lines of “I don’t mind being in a wheelchair for a few weeks,” I would recommend when they got home to put a chair next to the toilet and move from the chair to the toilet and back without either foot touching the floor. Never has someone come back and said “that was easy; let’s get them both done together.” Now, in the case of a simple ostectomy, maybe with an Akin, or an MTS Austin, I would do bilateral (but I didn’t have that many that needed just that level of procedure).
Jeff Pinsky, DPM, Richmond, VA

|
| RESPONSES/COMMENTS ( PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS)- PART 2B | |
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH
As a follow-up to my previous post concerning the reasoning for doing one foot at a time, my personal observation aligns with that of Dr. Wrotslavsky. Over my career of nearly 40 years, I have always done bilateral bunion surgery and agree that most patients prefer this route and the complication risk is almost non-existent doing both feet at one time. Truly, there is no reason not to do both bunions at the same time other than the insurance company wins by paying less for the second procedure and we lose income.
Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH, Newport Beach, CA

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP) | |
From: Eric Weinstein, DPM
I have since retired, but while I was practicing in Coral Springs, Florida, my office was right down the road from the shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
As I heard the police sirens whizzing by my office, we got a call from a police officer who was at the scene. He said he was at an active shooting and would not be able to make his appointment later that afternoon. Talk about a good excuse!
Eric Weinstein, DPM, Naples, FL
