OH Podiatrist Uses APC Injections for Chronic Heel Pain
According to Thomas Vail, DPM, "Your blood's platelets contain growth factors. An autologous platelet concentrates (APC) injection isolates the platelets from each patient's blood, and the platelets are then re-injected into the area with chronic inflammation. With this therapy, recovery time is only two weeks. Plus, it has no side-effects since it is the patient's own blood that we re-inject."
|
|
Dr. Thomas Vail |
"In addition, a local anesthetic is used on the injection site, so there is minimal pain. The entire procedure only takes about 15 minutes. After this therapy, patients are required to wear a walking boot for two weeks. Healing continues over the next several weeks. And the therapy can be repeated. So far, this technique has been used for many kinds of chronic inflammation, such as chronically inflamed wounds, bones, and tendons," says Dr. Vail.

| PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES | |
IN Podiatrist Discusses Risks Associated with Diabetes
According to Ashley Bojrab, DPM, "Diabetes attacks many systems in the body, including those tied to the function of the eyes, kidneys, heart, immune system, brain, skin, and others. This list also includes your feet, in a few ways. First, diabetes impacts your ability to feel in your feet, as many diabetics develop neuropathy. Without the usual sensations in your feet, you lose the body’s means of communicating when you experience trauma to the feet. You don’t receive the signal that there’s a problem."
|
|
Dr. Ashley Bojrab |
"This can mean more injuries on the feet, which leads to the second issue. When a diabetic has a wound, their body might not be able to heal it as quickly or well because of decreased immune function. This can lead to a higher risk of amputation if the wound does not heal appropriately."

OR Podiatrist and Wife are Proprietors of Olea Vineyards
Olea Vineyards, located in the valley’s southeast corner, created an experience aiming to revolutionize wine tasting by combining the best of the wine world (think the deep reds of a syrah or a cabernet sauvignon and the crisp flavors of a pinot blanc) with the laid-back lifestyle Oregon is known for.

|
Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Melillo |
The owners, Thomas Melillo, DPM, a podiatrist, and his wife Melinda take pride in hand-working the land and hand-crafting the wine, then pairing the result with great music, great food, and a pair of friendly winery dogs for an experience that lets visitors get what they should out of a wine tasting.

Podiatric Skin and Nail Involvement and Biomechanical Pathology in Renal Transplant Recipients
This study shows the high incidence of cutaneous and nail pathology in lower limbs suffered by kidney transplant patients, with older patients, greater comorbidity, and a higher BMI presenting more podiatric alterations. In summary, it is concluded that:
1. In the sample of kidney transplant patients studied, more than 90% of patients had at least one of the podiatric pathologies under study, and seven out of ten had both.
2. The most prevalent cutaneous and nail pathologies were hyperkeratosis, pruritus, onychogryphosis, and onychocryptosis, while the biomechanical pathologies were hallux abductus valgus, flat feet, and claw toes.
3. Patients with cutaneous and nail pathology were older, had a higher BMI, and had comorbidities such as diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, and perimalleolar edema.
4. The risk of suffering from both cutaneous and nail pathologies increases with age, as does the presence of diabetes after adjusting for sex.
5. The presence of skin and nail pathology of exogenous origin will negatively modify the quality of life.

8 Steps to Follow When Firing Practice Employees
Here are 8 things you must do to fire a practice employee.
3. Terminate poor performers
-
Bad employees will drive your best employees away. Frustration will build with your best employees as they cover for shortcomings and incompetence.
-
Good employees are hard to find, so it's always best to get rid of the bad ones as quickly as possible before they drag the entire team down.

RE: ABPM Seeks Merger With ABMSP
From: Lee C. Rogers, DPM
We cannot become ONE unless we embrace the whole profession. Almost 1/3 of American podiatrists have been shut out of the CPME-recognized board certification process. They experience significant financial harm. We must create an inclusive pathway for every podiatrist to be eligible to demonstrate their expertise, leading to certification by a CPME-recognized board.
6,500 of these CPME-excluded podiatrists have become certified by the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry (ABMSP). The American Board of Podiatric Medicine will be entering a due diligence period to explore a merger with the ABMSP. The resultant organization would be the largest organization in our profession, more than 12,000 podiatrists strong.
Lee C. Rogers, DPM, San Antonio, TX

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) | |
From: Mark Ross, DPM
Dr. Rothenberg said, “Diabetic is a label and should be avoided. Compliance is authoritative and stigmatizing." To an old-timer getting ready to be put out to pasture, my response is, “The truth shall set you free.”
We accept great responsibility when treating diabetics, particularly those with infections, ulcerations, osteomyelitis, and gangrene. Compliance always affects outcomes. Failure is not an option, but can happen and when it does, the onus is on us.
The most important thing a doctor can tell their patient is the absolute truth. And patients know when the doctor is lying. Give the patients credit. When the patient is told they’re going to lose their toe which could very well lead to loss of limb, which could lead to death within five years, they are not dwelling on your choice of words. They are looking to the doctor to save them. And that is our job.
Mark Ross, DPM, Yardley, PA
