Flats Can Cause Back and Heel Pain: KY Podiatrist
"Wearing high heels regularly can cause injury to the toes, ankles, knees and back," says Dr. Benjamin Schaffer of the Commonwealth Foot & Ankle Center. "But you can avoid the abusive effects by limiting the time you wear them to a couple of hours and by sitting and standing during the course of an evening."
|
Dr. Benjamin Schaffer |
He also points out that not all flats are orthopedically superior: "Flats with no arches or support in the sole can also cause back and heel pain … and those with pointy toes can cause the same deformities often associated with heels -- like bunions, calluses and hammertoes."

Eneslow and Aetrex Host Monday Night Football With Phil Simms
As The New England Patriots continue their quest for the perfect season, it was former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms providing the live commentary at Eneslow’s flagship store in Midtown Manhattan.
|
Dr. Andrew Shapiro, NYSPMA Trustee, Phil Simms, and Dr. Barry Block |
Dozens of podiatrists from the New York area filled the recently opened Eneslow megastore and enjoyed watching the game on several large screen TV’s throughout the store, as well as chatting with Simms and partaking of the hospitality of Eneslow CEO Bob Schwartz and his brother Larry, CEO of Aetrex Worldwide.
Simms proved an expert prognosticator. With Baltimore leading 10-3 near the end of the first half, he calmly predicted that the patriots would come back to win the game.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Record Storage
I now utilize an off site storage area for my old records. I am faced with moving them to another facility for a cost of about $150.00/month. Is it worth keeping the physical records or would it be better scanning the records and converting them to an electronic record. If so does anyone have any suggestions on whom or how to do so?

Query: Screw Insertion
What is the correct coding for the insertion of percutaneous cannulated screw for delayed union across calcaneal-cuboid joint that already has in place a large compression staple? The procedure occurred 5 months after an initial attempt of arthrodesis.
Glenn Weinfeld, DPM, Cortland Manor, NY
Response: I would recommend CPT 28740 (arthrodesis, midtarsal or tarsal-metatarsal, single joint) with a "-52" (reduced procedure) modifier.

Board Certification in Primary Care Podiatry (Juliet Burk, DPM)
As far as I know, the only board that APMA recognizes for primary care is ABPOPPM. I used the Review Text in Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine by Bernard and Kravitz. The test, however, is a good test of the knowledge and experience you have gained through residency and the first years of practice. If you didn't gain the necessary knowledge then, you'll have a hard time "studying" for the exam.

RE: Digital Imaging (Josh Prero, DPM) From: Ken Meisler DPM, Chad D Brady, DPM
I purchased the Scan X from Stone Podiatry. It was basically, plug in and start using. It is very cost- effective (supplies, labor, time, space savings) and patients are very impressed. I only wish I had started a year or two ago.
Ken Meisler DPM, New York, NY, Kenmeisler@aol.com
We have the ScanX system in one office and recently placed the CR system by 20/20 imaging in a new office. After having used both of these systems, here are a few conclusions:
1. The image quality by the 20/20 system is FAR superior to that of the ScanX.
2. Tigerview (the software behind ScanX) is more user-friendly and much easier to use and navigate. The 20/20 software is easy enough, there are just a couple of additional steps to input patient demos (DOB, MR #, ) etc. It's also harder to change images if they are saved under the wrong pt.
3. The automatic loading of the 20/20 system is very nice and easy for your staff.
4. I like that the 20/20 set up better. Everything is on one cart. (Scanner, computer, 2 external hard drives, battery back-up, slots for your cassettes, printer) The cart is included as part of the system. With ScanX, if you don't have a counter top in your x-ray space, you'll have to either buy your own cart or place a counter top there to put the system on.
5. I also thought that the setup and training with 20/20 was better than with ScanX (we did not get it through Stone Podiatry however.)
6. When we bought the ScanX a few years ago the decision was based on the fact that the Reina system was almost $50K. The 20/20 system is now very competitive and worth every penny.
Bottom line...in my opinion, in a head to head in our practice the 20/20 system wins hands down. I'll take better image quality over friendlier software any day.
Chad D Brady, DPM, Albuquerque, NM, drchadbrady@yahoo.com
