OH Podiatrist Lauds Cosmetic Adhesive That Disguishes a Lost Toenail

Losing your toenail sounds like a little thing, until you are traveling somewhere warm on vacation or it's sandal season here. So, Maria Barile, a Cleveland barber, decided to invent a cosmetic solution to address what is also, for many, a medical issue. Eventually, she got different samples of adhesives, found one that would work, and fashioned a nail prototype that women can wear on exposed toes.

Dr. Jeffrey Robbins

Barile went to a podiatrist to see if the product might help his patients. "While he's looking at it, my heart is on the floor," she says. "And then he looked up and said, "This is genius." "Genius!" Barile says. "No one has ever said that word in my presence." The podiatrist, Dr. Jeffrey Robbins, explains why. "It's simple, and it's needed," he says, because he sees so many patients who experience toenail loss.

AACPM Announces Selection of National Residency Facilitator

The Board of Directors of the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine (AACPM) has announced the selection of Edwin W. Wolf, DPM, MS as their National Residency Facilitator. Involved in graduate podiatric medical education his entire professional career, Dr. Wolf provided leadership within the AACPM’s Council of Teaching Hospitals (COTH); participates as a program site evaluator for CPME, and is currently a residency program director.

Dr. Edwin Wolf

Established in February 2005, the charge of the AACPM’s ad Hoc Committee on Balance between Graduates and Residency Positions has been to collect data, analyze class size and enrollments and approved residency positions. The purpose of recommending strategies is to ensure that there are enough entry-level residency positions for each graduating podiatric medical student. Membership on the Committee includes representatives from the AACPM Council of Deans, AACPM/COTH, ABPOPPM, ABPS, ACFAOM, ACFAS, ASPS, APMA, APMSA, as well as a CPME observer.

MN Podiatrist Supports Statewide Single-Payer Health Insurance System

The Minnesota Universal Health Care Coalition held an informational meeting at the new Marshall library building recently to organize support for a statewide single-payer health insurance system. The Minnesota Health Act, SF 0008/HF 0051 was written by state Democratic Sen. John Marty and is intended to provide health insurance coverage for all residents of Minnesota for all medical and dental needs.

Dr. Michael DeBrule

Dr. Michael DeBrule, a local podiatrist, argued that the proposed single-payer plan would cover everybody for all medical and dental conditions and reduce costs. "You can call this communism, socialism, anything you like," DeBrule said, "but I'm for it because I'm a humanitarian."

More Americans Have Foot Pain Than in any Other Part of Their Bodies: APMA Survey

If you're not planning on adding "lose weight" to your list of New Year's resolutions, you're in the minority. In fact, losing weight is one of the most commonly made resolutions, year after year. But it's definitely not the only health resolution you should consider making for 2012.The condition of your feet can clue you in to your overall health, and signs of serious problems like arthritis, diabetes, and circulatory issues can all be detected in the feet. More Americans have foot pain than in any other part of their bodies they consider vital to health, such as the skin, teeth, or even the heart, according to a survey by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA).

To prevent foot problems, make sure you wear shoes that fit well and offer plenty of support, don't wear the same pair every day, and avoid walking around barefoot, the APMA advises. If you experience foot pain, don't ignore it; seek a doctor's help.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)

Query: DB Consultants and 5010

I am currently using DB consultants for my billing software and they have told me they'll be 5010 compliant by the new year. They told us they will be doing all the testing, so we won't have to. We've had no update from them for this, and I'm more than a little worried about it.  Does anyone have experience with them regarding this issue?

RE: Non-Healing Ingrown Toenail (Malignant Melanoma)(David Weiss, DPM)
From: Bret Ribotsky, DPM

I wish to personally thank Dr. Weiss for sharing this case with all of us.  I too have seen a few dozen malignant melanomas in my practice. I often remind patients with any lesion under the toenail that a malignant melanoma killed Bob Marley. I know of no one who has ever sued a doctor or has died from a skin biopsy. This is a skill that should be much more common in our profession.

RE: Laser Treatment of Onychomycosis
From: Michael H. Simons, DPM, MS

I agree that there is little scientific basis for the claims of a "cure" and I feel that most claims are based on anecdotal information. Having over 15 years experience either chairing or serving on Institutional Review Boards (IRB's), I decided to become a Principal Investigator (PI) for Biolase Lasers in Irvine, California. I and my sub-investigators have constructed a protocol for an investigational study that has been approved by Western IRB and will include pre- and post-treatment cultures and photographs. This will be a year-long study and we treated our initial 35 subjects this month.

We have approval to enroll up to 100 subjects. Inclusion criteria calls for bilateral involvement and positive culture results. 8% Ciclopirox will be used in conjunction with the laser treatment on one side only to evaluate if this enhances the laser treatment. We will publish our results when the study is completed.

RE: Who Gets to Cast (Barry Mullen, DPM)
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM

That Dr. Mullen believes it's easy to teach an assistant how to cast correctly, especially in a ....busy... practice, is exactly what is wrong with the mindset of our fellow practioners. The argument that it is efficient, in a busy practice, is bogus. His position that an assistant could actually be taught, would have to be predicated on the assistant using their own ROM measurements, gait cycle observations, and biomechnical exam results, (you know, even a Cave Man can do it, mentality). Then, why did I go to podiatry school? I wonder how long an assistant would have to study to pass a podiatry school biomechanics course, when the only thing they know is how to cast?
