Goldsmith Re-Appointed Chair of Resolutions Committee
|
Dr. Harry Goldsmith |
Harry Goldsmith, DPM of Cerritos, CA has been appointed Chair of the 2007 APMA House of Delegates Resolution Committee. Goldsmith is CEO of Codingline.com and a member of the PM Podiatry Hall of Fame. Barry H. Block, DPM, JD of Forest Hills, NY will again serve as Vice Chair of the committee. Block is editor of Podiatry Management and PM News.
The Resolutions Committee meets the day before the HOD and considers resolutions that have met APMA's technical requirements. The Committee hearings are open to all APMA members and generally include lively debate on resolutions impacting the future of the profession. Historically, a "Do Pass" recommendation by the committee substantially increases its chances of passage by the full HOD.
The deadlines for submission of resolutions are as follows: December 24, 2006, for non-emergency resolutions calling for the expenditure of more than $10,000; January 24, 2007, for non-emergency resolutions calling for the expenditure of $1,000-$9,999; February 23, 2007, for non-emergency resolutions calling for the expenditure of less than $1,000; and March 25, 2007, before 12:00 pm for emergency resolutions.

Accreditation Agencies for DMEPOS Suppliers Announced
Eleven national accreditation agencies have been selected by CMS to accredit suppliers of Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS). These groups are tasked with ensuring that all DMEPOS suppliers remain in full compliance with the recently released Quality Standards. Suppliers who do not obtain accreditation from or remain accredited by one of the 11 agencies are not permitted to bill the Medicare program for DMEPOS items.
CMS acknowledges that requiring all suppliers to become accredited at once may represent a significant burden to the supplier community. In an effort to minimize this burden, CMS has instructed the accreditation agencies to consider previous accreditation, previous Medicare certification and compliance with state licensure when performing initial accreditation surveys.
In addition, CMS has instructed the accrediting agencies to focus their initial efforts on the Metropolitan Statistical Area’s (MSAs) selected for the first phase of the DMEPOS competitive bidding program. In the proposed rule, issued in May, 2006, CMS announced that the competitive bidding program will be implemented in 10 of the largest MSAs (except New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles) during 2007. Neither the 10 MSAs nor the actual 2007 implementation date for the competitive bidding program have been released. The 11 accrediting agencies are:
• Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) • Community Health Accreditation Program • Healthcare Quality Association on Accreditation • National Board of Accreditation for Orthotic Suppliers • Board for Certification in Pedorthics (BCP) • Accreditation Commission for Healthcare Inc. • Board for Orthotist/Prosthetist Certification (BOC) • National Association of Boards of Pharmacy • Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) • American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics Inc. (ABC) • The Compliance Team Inc.

I have been told that some podiatrists own their own MRI and C-ARM equipment for their offices. Can someone tell me what is the cost of these devices, who sells them, and can you bill for using this equipment?

RESPONSES / COMMENTS |
RE: A Picture is Worth a 1,000 Words From: Kevin A. Kirby, DPM
I am treating a 54 y/o female professional who is also a runner. This morning she brought in her running shoes and work shoes. Always on the lookout for new illustrations for my lectures, I decided to photograph this curious juxtaposition of footwear that she subjects her feet to on a daily basis in her desire to assume both the role of a business professional and a recreational athlete. As I lined up her shoes for the photo, I asked her that if a visitor from another world was to look at this photo of "human footwear" would they believe that both of these pairs of shoes were made for the same pair of human feet?
I thought the photo may be of use for others who visit PM News.

RE: Closing 1st MP Pressure Ulcers (Robert Teitelbaum, DPM) From: Kathleen J. Richards, DPM, Allen Sater, DPM
Dr. Teitelbaum didn't say if he have tried these yet; CAM walker or fiberglass cast immobilization, bone growth stimulator, and increase calcium intake. I have had excellent results in the past using EBI's stimulator.
Kathleen J. Richards, DPM, Scottsdale, AZ, sallyclub@excite.com
I have had great results with autologous platelet grafting. The patient can ambulate in a surgical shoe, or orthowedge shoe. Primatrix grafts have also yielded good results. Contact me if you have any questions.
