SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS |
Bret Ribotsky: Which is a better option for podiatrists - group practices or multi-specialty practices?
|
Dr. Barry Block |
Barry Block: I think they both are good options. First of all, a group practice is far more efficient than a solo practice because of the economies of scale. It also allows for time off for illness, which happens to all of us once in a while. It allows you to take a vacation, and when it is time for you to retire, it gives you an automatic buy-out, which is a concern to a lot of baby boomer practitioners who are getting into their 50s and 60s. Multi-specialty practices are excellent because they provide you with built-in referral sources right there. Also, you have this great educational opportunity to share medical concepts with practitioners who are trained from a different perspective. As podiatrists, we sometimes tend to have tunnel vision; we see things only as podiatrists.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY |
Top 5 Tips to Increase Patient Visits - Part 1
Being successful and competitive as an independent medical practice means filling that appointment schedule. Here are tips from practice management experts to do just that.
1. Focus on your schedule.
All too often, practices create barriers in their appointment schedule, with slots reserved for certain purposes, or patients being cancelled and rescheduled willy-nilly, according to author and consultant Elizabeth Woodcock. Your scheduler is your director of new business development; develop a schedule with slots for "short" and "long" appointments, easing the ability for him to appoint patients. If "pre-designated" slots are not filled with the intended patient with 72 hours to go, open the slot up to any patient. Remember, physician time is your practice's most precious asset. Accept same-day appointments; overbook the 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. slots to account for no-shows. Most importantly, don't ever bump patients, or they will bump you.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Paid Time Off Policy
I’m interested in the number of days that other practices allow for paid time off. This would include vacation, sick days, and bereavement. Do most offices give more time for longer tenured employees? Any input is appreciated.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1A |
From: David E Gurvis, DPM
I agree with Dr. Udell. The ACA needs tweaks, a whole lot of tweaks. Many of them could have been foreseen and already worked on, and maybe even fixed. Instead, all the emphasis has been on destroying the entire system. Presidential candidates are still saying how that is the first thing they will do – disassemble Obamacare. Where is the wherewithal to compromise, find the problems, and tweak them.
While I agree with Dr Udell, I just don’t know if anyone has the Chutzpah (nerve) to do what needs to be done….cross over to the middle and compromise and “tweak” rather than destroy.

I couldn't have said it any better than Dr. Kashan. The difference is that insurance companies have multimillion dollar lobbyists, and doctors get screwed.
