PODIATRISTS IN THE MEDIA
FL Podiatrist Discusses Heel Pain

Most heel pain is referred to as plantar fasciitis or heel spur pain and is actually caused by irritation of the plantar ligaments. The causes can be from overactivity, foot structure, weight, or footgear. It's multi-faceted and affects all ages," says podiatrist Stephen Levin, DPM.

Dr. Stephen Levin

"Most treatment of heel pain is with conservative care such as icing, stretching, or anti-inflammatories. We can inject cortisone, if needed. For chronic conditions, we can use extracorporeal shock wave therapy.

On Sunday, October 6th, Arthur Gudeon, DPM  walked in the Lustgarten Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk with Team Sue's Crewsers, a team named after his late wife Sue, who succumbed to the disease in 2012 after a three-year battle.

(L-R) Andrea Gudeon, Dr. Arthur Gudeon, and Anne Marie Dixon

Team Sue's Crewsers collected close to $3,000 in donations for the research foundation. Seen at the Walk are Gudeon with his daughter Andrea and long-time friend and advocate Anne Marie Dixon.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Study Finds Early Retirement May Speed Up Cognitive Decline

It’s hard to think of an early retirement as anything other than a positive. Who wouldn’t want to trade in their suit and tie for a pair of beach shorts? While retiring ahead of schedule may be easier on the body, a new set of research has found that it may not be so beneficial for the mind. The study, conducted at Binghamton University, finds that an early retirement can accelerate the usual rate of cognitive decline among the elderly.

The research team analyzed China’s new rural pension scheme (NRPS), as well as China’s most recent Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS), in order to investigate the effects of early retirement and pension benefits on individual cognition among adults over the age of 60. For reference, CHARLS is a representative national survey of China’s population over the age of 45 that tests respondents regarding mental cognition, episodic memory, and overall mental well-being.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Bleomycin Update

I wanted to see if there were any updates from the previous posts regarding the use of Bleomycin for destructions of warts. I know there is a code of CPT 11900 for intra-lesional injections with an ICD-10 code for hypertrophic scars, but not verruca. And I know that there is J9040 for Bleomycin supply. Has anyone had success on the J code? Any thoughts on the CPT 11900 code and what ideas on prior authorization to get properly reimbursed?

Nicholas Pagano, DPM, Plymouth Meeting, PA

Response: I recommend using CPT 17100. This is destruction of benign lesion (wart) by any method including chemical. It best defines the procedure you are performing. You should pre-authorize the Bleomycin to make sure the carrier covers that medication as a treatment for warts.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From Paul Kesselman, DPM

I have also been attempting to secure new blood on several committees which I participate in both at the state and national level. While I understand the newbees have other priorities (raising kids, etc.), the future of this profession cannot be dictated (nor should we want it to be dictated) by generations who came before you. We have come a long way since I came back from Chicago in 1981 but there are many more roadblocks ahead, for which we need a younger person's stamina and perspective. Please consider Dale's invitation to participate in whatever way you can. The future of this profession needs your contributions!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
RE: Shortage of PMSR/RRA Programs (Daniel Chaskin, DPM)
From: Charles M Lombardi, DPM, Alan A. MacGill, DPM

First, Dr. Chaskin is in error on several fronts. Most programs are PMSR/RRA. Second, it is only select states (that used the unified residency training model) in which one cannot do leg soft tissue procedures.

Charles M Lombardi, DPM, Flushing, NY

According to the 2020 CASPR Directory, nearly all of the podiatric residency programs in the country are PMSR/RRA with the exception of only 9 programs.

Alan A. MacGill, DPM, Boynton Beach, FL
