INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1 |
UK Podiatrist Discusses Heel Fissures
While feet are often pampered and preened during the summer in prep for all the beach and BBQ activities, it's easy to forget about your tootsies in the winter. But with party season fast approaching, it's time to dig out those slinky heels and prepare to bare your feet!
|
Michael Harrison Blount |
“Cracked heels are caused by dry, hard skin at the edges of the heel being put under pressure, which in turn causes the skin to crack and split. They are a sign that the skin is dehydrated so is therefore vulnerable to cracking when it is bent, stretched, or put under pressure," Michael Harrison Blount, lecturer in podiatry at the University of Salford says.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1 |
IL Podiatrist's Efforts Allow Tornado Victim to Run Marathon
Runners have a reputation as a close-knit community, but recently Elmhurst runners banded together to help a Washington, IL woman reach her goal. "We just wanted to support her," Elmhurst podiatrist Dr. Misty McNeill said. Sarah Earl, a mother of three, set a goal to run 13 half marathons in 2013. Saturday she ran the Mattoon Santa Chase, her 12th half marathon this year. McNeill saw a Facebook post through a mutual friend of Earl's and McNeill's, Andy Querio, looking to help Earl after the recent EF-4 tornado destroyed her home.

Through a coordinated effort, local merchants and others donated running supplies to Earl. McNeill, a runner herself, sees many runners at Prairie Path Foot and Ankle Clinic. It didn't take much for McNeill to put herself in Earl's position. "It just sort of resonated with me that that could be any of us at any time," she said.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2 |
MI Conducts Hat and Glove Drive for Needy Children
Dr. Lee Hoffman, a podiatrist at NorthPointe Foot & Ankle in Berkley, said he and his fellow doctors are always looking for a way to get involved in their community, from working with the Rotary Club to the Berkley Chamber of Commerce.
|
Dr. Lee Hoffman |
But for Hoffman, one of the most important community collaborations is the annual hat and glove drive with the Berkley Senior Center. Hoffman said he hopes a donation drive such as the hat and glove drive will evolve into other ways to help local families, such as a donation at the end of summer to help local students with school supplies before classes start.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS |
BME Receives FDA Clearance for the Upgraded Hammertoe Fixation System
BioMedical Enterprises, Inc.(BME), the U.S. leader in shape memory technology for small bone fixation, and the first and only U.S.-based manufacturer of Nitinol implants for use in the foot, hand, and wrist has announced the recent FDA clearance (K131640) of an upgrade to the patent-pending HammerLock® Nitinol Intramedullary Fixation System.
|
Dr. Todd Stewart |
"This new design demonstrates our commitment to both developing new products and improving our existing lines," said Keith M. Peeples, BME President and CEO. BME Surgeon Consultant, Todd Stewart, DPM stated, "The upgraded HammerLock system is a simple but very impressive improvement. This offers the surgeon easier insertion, prevents gapping at the arthrodesis site, and the new tab has just the right tension for keeping it on during reduction and for easy removal."

OBAMACARE NEWS |
Obama Administration Delays Online Insurance Enrollment for Small Business
The Obama administration announced a one-year delay of online enrollment for small businesses looking to purchase healthcare coverage for their workers through the federally operated insurance exchanges. Starting in 2014, the Small Business Health Options Program, or SHOP, marketplace will be open to employers with 50 or fewer full-time workers and allows those businesses to compare health plans.
HHS also said small businesses no longer have to apply to be certified before enrolling in a SHOP plan. Because the application was intended for tax credit purposes, HHS will allow businesses to file the application any time before the business files its taxes.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
Query: Ankle Privileges in New York
Regarding the law in NY that will allow podiatrists to treat the foot and ankle, I was wondering if there is there a grandfather clause. How will a podiatrist trained in the '70s be responsible for the development of 3-year programs and the training of residents in ankle procedures?
Ira Baum, DPM, Miami, FL
Editor's comment: According to NYSPMA, the final wording of the new scope of practice law is not complete. The law will be implemented in three to four months. There will be no grandfathering of privileges. Residents will be taught ankle procedures either by orthopedic surgeons or by podiatrists who have been certified to teach these procedures.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (ICD-10) |
From: Jim Shipley, DPM
Dr. Kornfeld, you recently posted a thread in PM News that once again stated the need for all podiatrists to move toward a cash payment situation. Even though I don't disagree with your assessment of our nationwide current standings in the medical community with insurance companies and our scope of practice, I do believe some things need to be put into perspective. Assuming that not all podiatrists will convert to your cash model in one unified motion, what do you think will happen in my situation?
(I took the liberty of researching the demographics of the area in which you practice compared to mine.)
Manhasset, NY
According to a 2009 estimate,[4] the median income for a household in the CDP was...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP) |
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM
Dr. Bijack, your parenthetical "podiatry hater" signature is most confusing. I think you have proved over the years with your many postings, your deep love of the profession. Wanting a profession to succeed and improve reveals true love. Just because your remarks are written in cynical and sarcastic tone does not make you a hater. I appreciate your insight and agree with many (not all) of your thoughts and recognize with clarity that you are far from a podiatry hater. So you're not diplomatic - big deal, nobody's perfect.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1A |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
Kudos to Dr. Canales for picking up that rare MRSA infection and saving the patient's leg. Reading stories like this continues to make me proud to be part of this profession.
Perhaps the infection was caused by an injection, but I assume that the urgent care center used proper aseptic technique in giving injections. This past month, a patient presented to my office with an interesting medical history. He developed sudden back pain, went to multiple doctors, and finally was diagnosed with a staph infection of the spine which had to be surgically drained. He never had a spinal injection or procedure in his life, and there were no other obvious portals of entry.

Full-Time Clinical Position - NYCPM
The New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) is seeking DPM applicants for a full-time (four days totaling 32 clock hours per week) position within its Department of Medical Sciences. Applicants must be 24- or 36-month residency trained, and be ABPM and/or ABPS qualified/certified. Evidence of prior research experience or medical publication will add to the strength of one’s application. Diabetic/Charcot foot and wound care experience will also favor the respondent. Applicants must also be comfortable working in a chairside environment as well as supervising the care of podiatric inpatients. The position is heavily geared toward the dermatological, neurological, infectious diseases and vascular aspects of pedal disease, with podiatric surgery playing a lesser role. Applicant must be licensed in New York State.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1B |
From: Erum Quadeer, DPM
The story on the MRSA infection through Cleveland Magazine posted in PM News yesterday states that MRSA is a "virulent bacillus." I'm not sure if that was a misprint or the physician was misquoted, but people should know that MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, not bacillus.
