Regular Podiatric Visits by Diabetics Reduce Risk of Amputation: IA DPMs
People walk all over them and usually think nothing of it. They’re the feet, and its important to show some respect, local foot doctors said. “We have 26 bones in each foot,” said Dr. Edward Prikaszczikow. “If you add both feet, almost one-fourth of all the bones in the human body are in the feet. It’s a very complex structure.” “They’re put to work every day,” added Dr. Eric Palmquist. “We take them for granted.”

Proper foot care is extremely important for diabetics, particularly those suffering with ulcers. According to Prikaszczikow, calluses, if not cared for, can lead to ulcer infection, leading to potentially serious problems, including leg amputation. “Visiting a podiatrist (foot doctor) once a year can reduce the potential for amputation because we can identify risk factors,” he said.

Broadcast in from the BioCommunications Unit at UA Medical Center, Armstrong discussed his teams' latest studies and programs in mobile health (mHealth). "From smart shirts to smart socks, we can now help people monitor how they move through their world."

Professors Luc Teot of Montpelier and David Armstrong lead discussion on advanced mobile health |
Armstrong went on to discuss sensors fit into bath mats that can predict when someone will develop a limb-threatening wound. "We at SALSA envision a subscription service - just like Hulu or Netflix or your home security system - but for your body. What we have been discussing and working on for years has now become inexpensive enough to fit under your, my, and our patients' sinks."

MI Podiatrist Pleads Guilty to Medicare Fraud
A Grand Rapids podiatrist pleaded guilty on Monday, Nov. 26, to healthcare fraud for filing Medicare claims for services he did not perform. Dr. Anthony J. Kirk entered the plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph Scoville in Grand Rapids. Kirk reached a plea agreement with federal prosecutors prior to the case going before a federal grand jury for possible indictment.
The sides have agreed that restitution should be set at $65,110. The government cited one case in which Kirk billed Medicare $125 to remove a toenail plate. The doctor was paid $73.46 by Medicare. The patient underwent “routine foot care” that typically would not be reimbursed by Medicare, the government said.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Remember Staff at Holiday Time
This time of year of affords a great opportunity to recognize the most valuable asset in your office - your team. Close to Christmas, have someone dressed as Santa Claus show up at your office and hand out certificates for manicures for team members and the equivalent for males. Another great idea is the night before New Year's Eve, leave a bottle of champagne for each team member with a note listing 10 great things that happened relating to the office in 2012. Make number one state, "Because of you!" or simply, "YOU". You will get a great bang for your dollar with both ideas combined costing under twenty five dollars each.

RE: 1st MTPJ Fusion or Lapidus for Severe HAV (Mark Aldrich, DPM)
From: Thomas Graziano, DPM, MD
If your patient is healthy, young to middle age and "active", he/she would be better served with a Lapidus. There is truly no substitute for the Lapidus when correcting metatarsal position and aiding in medial column stabilization. Patients who are elderly with more sedentary lifestyles do extremely well with a 1st MPJ arthrodesis. Once you see the effectiveness of this procedure in reducing extremely high IM angles, it will be your go-to procedure in the latter patient population.

RE: HHS Warns Providers Not to Use EHRs "to Game the System"
From: Charles Morelli DPM
When I read this article, I immediately recalled the last sentence spoken by a young Hispanic child to Linda Hamilton (aka Sarah Conner) in The Terminator when he said, "Un tormenta viene." Translated "A storm is coming." I then thought of Margo Channing in All About Eve when she said, "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night!" Retirement is looking better and better.
