APMWA Announces 38th Annual Student Writing Competition
The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 38th Annual Student Writing Competition.
-
All papers MUST be non-technical in nature and original. Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, healthcare, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.

There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.
-
First prize one thousand dollars ($1,000), Second prize seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750) Third prize five hundred dollars ($500) sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.

Don't Wear Dirty Socks to Bed: CA Podiatrist
According to a 2023 study done by British company MattressNextDay that involved polling 1,017 people across the world, only 30% of them bothered to swap out their dirty socks for a fresh pair before crawling into bed for the night. After swabbing pairs of socks worn between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., the researchers found pseudomonas aeruginosa, a germ found in cockroaches that can cause infections in humans in these gross items of clothing.

MA Podiatrist Warns Against Wearing UGG-Style Boots
High heels and other types of overly cramped footwear are well-known culprits of painful foot issues. However, shoes that are too loose can also make wearers susceptible to various issues. “Too much motion can lead to overuse syndromes, such as tendonitis,” said Frances J. Lagana, DPM, a Massachusetts-based podiatrist and division chief of podiatry at UMass Memorial Health. “It can also create shearing injuries resulting in blisters and calluses.”

The extra space inside the shoe may cause your foot to work harder than it needs to, which may lead to overuse injuries such as sprains and plantar fasciitis. “[These boots are] very roomy, so they can cause overuse of the musculature and the tendons of the feet. Essentially, when you’re wearing a shoe that isn’t secure, you’re trying to hold a shoe on with your foot as you walk,” Dr. Lagana said.

My group takes call at our local hospital and this necessitates seeing patients in the emergency room (ER) on occasion. We are not all in agreement regarding what E/M codes should be used in this scenario. We have come up with different encounters:
-A patient seen in the ER. The patient is then discharged to follow-up for out patient care.
-A patient is seen in the ER and then admitted for continued medical treatment.
-A patient is seen in the ER and emergently taken straight to the operating room for surgical
treatment.
