Running in Extreme Cold More Problematic for Children: CT Podiatrist
We are constantly being asked if children should run. There is a growing concern that running is dangerous for children. People are worried about possible injuries including joint damage which could cause permanent injury to the epiphyseal or growth plates, chondromalacia patellae, knee tendinitis, pain of the heel, as well as psychological problems resulting from the pressure to perform.
|
|
Dr. Robert Weiss |
According to podiatrist Dr. Robert Weiss, "In the absence of long-term studies on children's running, many debates have taken place. My thinking has always been that running is a sport that everyone can enjoy, if done at the individual's own level of fitness and ability. There are, of course, overuse problems in children just as there are in adults. It is also important to remember that a child's thermo-regulatory system is not as well-formed or effective as an adult's. Yet, children seem to have a greater psychological tolerance for heat and have shown to tolerate cold poorly. Therefore, care should be taken when running in extreme weather conditions."

UK Podiatrist Provides Cold Weather Footcare Tips
If you are starting to feel the cold snap right down to your feet, follow the expert advice of podiatrist Lorraine Jones to have tip top toes this winter...
|
|
Lorraine Jones |
1. Wear shoes that fit well and have room for socks. They are much warmer than tights.
2. Avoid ballet pumps and shoes with thin soles, as they give no protection from the cold.
3. Keep skin moisturized daily. Central heating dries out the skin.

SC Podiatrists Hold Holiday Shoe and Sock Drive
On the heels of Thanksgiving, Coastal Podiatry Associates continues collecting new and gently used shoes – and new socks for relay to local needy children and adults. Drop-off donations for this third annual shoe drive through Dec. 15 are at the practice’s offices in Myrtle Beach, Conway, Little River, and near Surfside Beach.

|
(L-R). Drs. Scott Werter, Jordanna Baker, Scott Hamilton, and Joseph Menn |
Tanya Sewell, director of patient and community relations for the practice operated by four doctors and a crew of 15 people, said in the week before Thanksgiving that this annual collection began with inspiration from the global effort by the Soles4Souls shoe charity, and the outpouring of relief after the Haitian earthquake in January 2010. Just thinking about such a basic need locally, Coastal Podiatry officials have stepped up awareness about this critical need across Horry County with this shoe drive every fall, Sewell said.

CO Podiatrist's Daughter Teaches Him a Thing or Two About Hunting
It’s many kids’ dream to go hunting with their dad; father and son bagging a big bull elk or mule deer buck. In this case, it’s father and daughter. Or, maybe daughter and father. Kelly Cook, 14, has accomplished what many rifle hunters can’t in their lifetime. The Cortez Middle School eighth-grader has hunted twice and fired a total of three shots with her Ruger .243. With those three shots, Cook has killed 6-by-6 and 5-by-6 bull elk.

Cook hunted near Lone Mesa State Park last fall with her father, Dr. Terry Cook, a local podiatrist. “It was awesome,” Kelly said. “When my dad went over to get it, he started screaming and yelling (in excitement).” This hunting season, father and daughter were back near Lone Mesa.

| SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS | |
Editor's Note: PM News is proud to present excerpts from Meet the Masters
Bret Ribotsky: Why did you choose to limit your practice to wound-care?
|
|
Dr. Desmond Bell |
Desmond Bell: You do not choose wound-care, wound-care chooses you. It's like a calling as there is nothing glamorous with wound-care. I started by being interested in sports medicine. While a resident at the VA in Philadelphia, I realized that other physicians thought of us as an equals when we were treating patients with wounds.

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday night at 9 PM (EST). This week is open mike week, with guest, Dr. Barry Block, editor of Podiatry Management and the publisher of PM News. You can register for future events by clicking here

RE: 1st MTPJ Fusion or Lapidus for Severe HAV (Mark Aldrich, DPM)
From: Michael J Marcus, DPM
Based on my 35 years of experience, I would initially evaluate the condition of the 1st MPJ. Also, what is the patient's age? Generally, I would prefer fusing an MPJ on an arthritic joint. I would not fuse it in a younger patient unless other conditions, e.g. neurological, exist. My tendency is to perform either closing 1st met wedges or Lapidus on younger patients, as most of these patients have congruent 1st MPJ/non-degenerative joints.
