FL Podiatrist Discusses Protective Function of Toenails

Nails are made up of the same types of cells as our skin, which has a clear protective purpose, says Grace Torres-Hodges, DPM, a board certified podiatrist and food surgeon based in Pensacola, Florida. In her line of work, she’s often asked by patients about the purpose of toenails. Though she doesn’t have any single, definite answer for them, she thinks they help to protect against cuts, infection, and other damage to the toes.

Dr. Grace Torres-Hodges

There is a lot of vascular and nerve structure in our toes, Torres-Hodges says, which is potentially fragile–not to mention the small bones. And, as a bonus, assessing toenails can offer clues to whole-body health, she says. Peculiarities in color, texture, and shape can hint at chronic health issues like respiratory, thyroid, and liver disease, she says.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
MA Podiatrists Participate in Foot Health Screening

David Alper, DPM, a member of the APMA Board of Trustees, and three residents from the Beth Israel/Deaconess Hospital residency program manned the “Foot Health Screening” as part of the State of Diabetes event, held in Boston by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) on November 22nd.

(L-R): Drs. John Speight, David Alper, Rahul Mishra, and Michelle Kung

The ADA is holding State of Diabetes events in many cities throughout the country in November, as part of National Diabetes Month. The events feature foot, eye, blood sugar, and other screenings, as well as representatives from both medical organizations, public health associations, and medical and food vendors. These events are free to attend, with the purpose of helping to educate those with diabetes and their caretakers about all that is available to assist in their care.

VA Podiatrist Featured in Book About the Making of Breaking Away

Ben Pearl, DPM is featured in a book, Breaking  Away: The Quintessential  Underdog Movie  by Steve Basford. Dr. Pearl rode in the Little 500 race that is the centerpiece of the movie, which won an Oscar for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screening in 1980. Basford, a sports  journalist, was so inspired by the movie he decided to write a book about the making of Breaking Away. After viewing some of Pearl‘s podcasts, Basford interviewed Pearl for source material for the book. Pearl’s daughter Sirena did the artwork for the back cover jacket. Pearl featured Basford and a racer in the movie in his review of Basford’s book.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Having Flat Feet is a Normal Anatomical Variant: Study

The idea that having flat feet inevitably leads to pain or other musculoskeletal problems goes back centuries. It was revived during the second half of the 1900s, when U.S. podiatrists popularized the notion of having ‘normal’ feet. This included the theory that not having a well-defined arch or a straight heel would make your feet abnormal and more prone to injury, because they would experience greater arch flattening while walking, for example.

However, researchers at the University of Québec in Trois-Rivières in Canada claim that the theory is unfounded. They conducted an editorial study, reviewing the body of research surrounding flat fleet, and found that there was virtually no link between having flat feet and the chance of developing a musculoskeletal disorder such as heel, knee, or hip pain. "If we look at the literature, having flat feet makes you have a higher risk of, I think, three or four pathologies, that's it," said Gabriel Moisan, DPM, professor in podiatric medicine and one of the authors of the study. "But if we take straighter feet, you would be more at risk of developing, let's say, three or four other pathologies, and for high arch feet, it will be four different also."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
5 Tips for Preparing for New Opportunities

We’ve seen a lot of positive movement to address some key issues leading to healthcare attrition and burnout. For example, there is stronger encouragement for work-life balance, more staff, mental health resources, and overall better support systems for physicians. However, there is still work to do and some considerations at the onset of a career move. I encourage physicians to look at these five areas before they consider a new role:

2. Evaluate the viability of the need

Understanding why the organization is recruiting for a specific role is paramount. Ask questions about the reasons for the recruitment and the history of the position. What strengths and accomplishments have been achieved, and what challenges or roadblocks have been encountered? This information will help you gauge the stability of the role. It’s also important to assess whether the organization's goals align with yours. A clear understanding of the position's viability can prevent potential disappointments and ensure that you are stepping into a role with realistic expectations.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODING & BILLING)
From: David J. Freedman, DPM

The AOFAS has adopted the term “progressive collapsing foot deformity" in part because of the difficulty in being reimbursed for a diagnosis of “flatfoot".- Allen Jacobs, DPM

As Chair of the APMA Coding committee, we submitted an application in May of 2021 to the National Center for Health Statistics, ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee located in Hyattsville, Maryland. We explained progressive collapsing foot deformity using clinical references and peer-reviewed literature, then detailed why the organizations deserved its own set of ICD-10-CM codes. The term “progressive collapsing foot deformity" has been widely accepted, evidenced by the fact it...

Our profession lost a kind and gentle man. Harvey was a true inspiration to anyone who met him and who was lucky enough to enjoy his sense of humor and his love of life as well as our profession. A great loss.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY)
From: William Defeo, DPM,

I recently saw that two of my classmates, Schail Frank and Steve Deitch, retired after 48 and 47 years of practice, respectively. I retired after 46 years. I think I left too soon. What a great profession. Congratulations to both.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

We should all be thankful that Dr. Roth is an enlightened member of the podiatric community who is able to share with us what we shouldn't do, I think. He has not been familiar with insurance billing for some time, since he has converted to a direct pay model, Somehow he is still an expert on how the insurance panel members are unethical. These providers are, after all, only interested in making money. Dr. Roth has the ability to see into a provider’s mind and discern their true intentions without the use of phrenology, tea leaves, or Tarot cards.

Unfortunately, his psychic gifts do not extend to an article What’s New in Orthopaedic Rehabilitationin a recent JBJS, Dextrose prolotherapy has shown promise as a low-cost, efficacious, and...
