PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Falling Can Be a Sign of Diabetic Neuropathy: OH Podiatrist

According to Jane Graebner, DPM, "Your feet are the foundation of an active lifestyle. But if diabetes has been damaging the nerves in your lower extremities, you may begin experiencing peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling, or burning in the feet and toes). With the loss of feeling comes other serious risks such as loss of balance leading to frequent falls and open sores on the feet, causing possible amputations."

Dr. Jane Graebner

Once numbness sets in, you are now also at a greater risk of falling. In fact, your risk of falling triples if you have a nerve disorder such as peripheral neuropathy. If you fall once, it doubles your chances of falling again. One in five falls causes a serious injury, with 18,000 fatalities yearly in older adults (CDC). Talk to your healthcare team about available resources such as physical therapy to improve balance and strength; dietary counseling, exercise via Silver Sneakers or even a personal trainer and other weight loss options to improve glucose control; and see your podiatrist regularly to keep that active lifestyle you deserve," says Dr. Graebner.

ABFAS IN THE NEWS
ABFAS Transitions to Continuous Certification in January

The American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS) is making a major change to the way its Diplomates will keep their Board Certified status current. Launching in January 2022, the new program LEAD: Longitudinal Education and Assessment for Diplomates will replace ABFAS’ traditional, once-every-ten-years recertification and self-assessment examinations. All Diplomates will begin participating in the LEAD program in January 2022, regardless of certification expiration date.

LEAD will allow Diplomates to participate in a self-paced online assessment of 30 questions per quarter, anytime and from anyplace, on any device. In addition, Diplomates will receive instant feedback on questions, as well as references and rationales, resulting in a process of continuous learning...with no need to travel to a testing center. Both holders of Time-limited Certificates (certified after 1990) and holders of Lifetime Certificates (certified before 1991) will participate in the LEAD program.

PODIATRISTS AND PROFESSIONAL DISCIPLINE
Former VA Podiatrist Now on Probation

The Indiana podiatrist at the center of over 100 lawsuits against the Department of Veterans Affairs has been placed on probation for three years but will keep his license. Bradley Hammersley was fired from the VA health system in northern Indiana in 2017. After an internal review, the VA disclosed that there were problems with 147 surgeries performed by Hammersley on the feet and ankles of veterans. A wave of lawsuits followed. Under the terms of the probation, he is banned from owning or co-owning a practice and must disclose his probation to his employer. His employer must conduct quarterly audits of his cases and provide reports to the board. Hammersley must also pay the state of Indiana $10,750 to cover the state’s expert witness fees.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Six Tips for Your Employee Cell Phone Policy

A smartphone can be a distraction to staff members and also a potential HIPAA violation waiting to happen. Here are tips to avoid that at your practice.

5. What related technology or device-related policies will you need?

Camera usage and social media are obvious ones. Also, consider whether Protected Health Information is ever accessed in any way on a mobile device, via email, browser, or software portal. What about tablets and laptops? Are any employees using company-provided phones or devices? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you need additional policies, which must be professionally written and HIPAA-compliant.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: CMS Healthcare Employee Vaccination Mandate

Can anyone clarify the latest developments regarding federal government mandating all healthcare facilities receiving CMS payments requiring their employees be vaccinated by Jan. 4, 2022? Is there an exemption for offices with fewer than 100 employees?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Ivar E. Roth DPM, MPH

I read Dr. McLean’s comment that regrowth after a P&A is common, which I do not agree with. I have been doing and following up these procedures for 36 years in practice. I know my recurrence rate is less than 1% as I tell all patients that I guarantee my work and will re-do any nail that they have ANY regrowth with for NO charge. I will say that meticulous removal of all matrix and careful use of phenol is important for great results. I am curious what the average practitioner's regrowth rate is but I doubt it falls into being able to say that it is common.

I will make a video of my technique to share with the profession via PM News soon to show the pearls of doing a P&A that does not result in regrowths.
