Conway McLean, DPM, an area podiatric physician, lectured recently at a national conference for foot care nurses. Dr. McLean is a podiatrist and director of Superior Foot and Ankle Centers the Upper Peninsula.

McLean lectured on the prevention of diabetic lower extremity amputations and also on foot and leg biomechanics and the problems that result. This is the second year Dr. McLean has lectured at this conference which attracts foot care nurses from all across the country.

CA Podiatrist Settles fo $1.6 Million Over Alleged Rx Kickback Scheme
In a significant development concerning medical ethics and legal accountability, a Fresno doctor and his respective medical corporation have agreed to pay $1.6 million to settle allegations of participating in an illegal kickback scheme; the scheme involved receiving payments for prescribing medications through certain mail-order pharmacies, according to U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert's announcement. Dr. Jagpreet Mukker, a podiatrist, along with his medical corporation, Jay Mukker, DPM Inc., is parting with $1,598,891 to settle the claims. Dr. Mukker acknowledged and agreed not to dispute that from 2016 to 2020, he took payments tied to prescriptions he issued to a chain of mail-order pharmacies.

5 Tips for Preparing for New Opportunities
We’ve seen a lot of positive movement to address some key issues leading to healthcare attrition and burnout. For example, there is stronger encouragement for work-life balance, more staff, mental health resources, and overall better support systems for physicians. However, there is still work to do and some considerations at the onset of a career move. I encourage physicians to look at these five areas before they consider a new role:
1. Assess the culture
One of the most crucial aspects of considering a new leadership role is evaluating the culture of the organization. This goes beyond the surface-level interactions and dives into the core values and behaviors of the team you will be working with. Do the people you’re interacting with show humility, preparation, respect, courtesy, and excellent organization? Positive culture indicators can be observed throughout your recruitment process, from initial interviews to more informal meetings with potential colleagues. A supportive and collaborative culture is essential for long-term success and job satisfaction.

I recently had spinal fusion of lumbar 3-4-5 performed by an orthopedic surgeon. He saw me the morning of the surgery and then the next day in the hospital. The next time I saw him was 6 weeks later. (His PA removed Steri-strips after two weeks.)
Compared to other specialties, I think we podiatrists coddle our patients. Granted, I completed my residency 43 years ago, but this was my routine with bunion surgery patients: Surgery on Friday, bandage change on Monday, suture removal the next week, then a follow-up visit in four weeks and again in another month. I know I didn't make much money on the surgery because I saw the patient many times during the global period for free.
