Diabetic Screening Especially Important for African-Americans: GA Podiatrist
The American Podiatric Medical Association has started a “Reflect on Your Feet” campaign alerting individuals that diabetes can cause nerve damage called neuropathy, a loss of feeling in the feet. “With diabetes a couple of different things occur and the most common we see is peripheral neuropathy, where someone may have a numbness or tingling sensation that won’t go away,” said Dr. Rondrick Williamson, an African-American podiatrist who has been featured on television and in major U.S. magazines for his work.

For African-Americans, it’s especially important to get screened for diabetes, Williamson said. “In the population, the first thing is that it could be hereditary because a lot of African-Americans have parents or grandparents who are diabetic,” he said.

PA Podiatrist Secretly Recorded Co-workers in Restroom
A podiatric physician has been arrested on allegations he secretly videotaped co-workers in an employee restroom at his Lower Paxton Township office. Dr. David Todoroff is charged with five misdemeanor counts of invasion of privacy, according to charging documents. According to the criminal complaint, a co-worker found a cell phone last month in the employee restroom at Keystone Podiatric.

HEALTHCARE NEWS |
UnitedHealth May Withdraw From ACA Exchanges in 2017
The nation’s largest health insurer, UnitedHealth Group, said Thursday that it is retreating from efforts to attract customers for the coming year in insurance exchanges created under the Affordable Care Act — and may withdraw from the marketplaces altogether in 2017.
UnitedHealth executives attributed the abrupt change of course to what they called “higher risks and more difficulties” in selling coverage through the exchanges in a way that is profitable. The company is the first major insurer to say it might leave the exchanges, raising questions about the stability of the marketplaces that now provide a path to insurance for 10 million Americans.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY |
Five Steps to Improve the Patient Experience - Part 2
Here are five key steps you can take to make that change in your practice:
1. Make your practice look and feel engaging
Patients will judge your practice before they even meet you. Making a good impression starts with a well-designed, patient friendly website where the public can learn about your practice, including: your mission; the credentials of your physicians; the range of services you offer; your location(s) and office hours. Also don't forget to include interactive tools that allow patients access to even more information via pull-down menus, a map and directions to the office, and a portal for existing patients to make payments, schedule follow-up appointments, and communicate through secure e-mail.
Remember that a welcoming practice also depends on an appealing, clean, and comfortable office with amenities to ensure that patients feel cared for and important, in both the reception area and the exam room.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Retaining EOBs
How long should we keep paper Explanation of Benefit (EOB) payment vouchers? We are thinking of shredding 2011 and 2012.
Laurie, Office of John Arsen, DPM, Lake Orion, MI
Response: State laws generally govern how long medical records are to be retained. However, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 administrative simplification rules require a covered entity, such as a physician billing Medicare, to retain required documentation for six years from the date of its creation or the date when it last was in effect, whichever is later. Your state may require a longer retention period.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
RE: Resident Documentation and Coding Survival Skills
From: Christopher Japour, DPM
In the past, the educational focus of medical and residency training has involved training doctors to be medically prepared. However, the increasingly complex regulations that direct clinical care have necessitated the incorporation of the educational component of resident training to both business and practice management that involve all facets of medical care.(1) There appears to be a training deficiency with combined medical documentation and coding beginning early on with medical students, interns, and leading on to residents who many times are often at teaching hospitals.(2)
There are many reasons to formally teach documenting and coding principles during medical training because...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) |
From: Richard H. Mann, DPM
For those of my colleagues interested in further investigating the correlation between dementia and diabetes, I suggest reading "Alzheimer’s Disease Is Type 3 Diabetes—Evidence Reviewed", Suzanne M. de la Monte, M.D., M.P.H.and Jack R. Wands, M.D., J Diabetes Sci Technol 2008;2(6):1101-1113, in which the authors state: "We conclude that the term 'type 3 diabetes' accurately reflects the fact that Alzheimer's disease represents a form of diabetes that selectively involves the brain and has molecular and biochemical features that overlap with both type 1 diabetes mellitus and T2DM."
Another interesting relationship between these two diseases appears to be abnormal thiamine metabolism as described in "Abnormal thiamine-dependent processes in Alzheimer's Disease. Lessons from diabetes", Gary E. Gibson, et al., Mol Cell Neurosci. 2013 July; 55: 17–25. doi:10.1016/j.mcn.2012.09.001.
