INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE |
New Runners Need to Pace Themselves: Aussie Podiatrist
For Jeremy Gersh, a sports podiatrist and spokesman for the Australian Podiatry Association, the primary thing runners need to be mindful of is their feet. "The feet absorb your shock; they're the first point of contact," he explains. "Because running's high impact - it's twice the body weight of impact on each foot as walking is - you're really absorbing twice your weight on one foot each time you run." Common injuries among runners include plantar fasciitis, bursitis, and a range of stress-related ailments. The biggest risk can lie with those who are new to running or taking on more than they can handle.
|
Jeremy Gersh |
"Beginners often get a bit excited and start running all the time, and they're the ones most likely to get these injuries," Gersh says. "It needs to be more of a slow and steady increase in the amount of running." The key is knowing your foot type and investing in a pair of running shoes suited to your needs (as well as pacing yourself when it comes to training).

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY |
Thank Staff with Apple Pies for Thanksgiving
Looking for simple and inexpensive ways to show staff how much you appreciate them. One timely way is to buy an apple pie for each staff member a day or two before Thanksgiving. Include a note thanking them for their role in the practice, their hard work and dedication.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS |
Bret Ribotsky: How is treadmill running different than normal running?
|
Dr. Brian Fullem |
Brian Fullem: There is more shock absorption on a treadmill. A treadmill allows you to control the incline. The foot is in contact a little longer on a treadmill. Some people think that you should add incline to compensate for the lack of wind drag, but there is also a lack of cooling from the wind not being present; thus I tend to keep the treadmill in the flat position.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Source for Leather Gauntlet AFO
Our 3 DPM group was getting nice AFOs from a vendor who has run into difficulties. These were of very high quality in materials and workmanship. We are looking for another vendor that can produce a similar leather gauntlet AFO with custom footplate and stays, custom-molded lacer, and a pre-tibial custom shell. We want there to be some flexibility at the ankle, which is derived from the give in the leather. Our patients loved these compared to the bulky, heavy devices they received at other offices. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

From: Patricia Antero, DPM
Over the last few years, laser therapy has been changing the way medical practices all over the world are helping their clients manage pain and recover faster from injury, disease, and surgery. Every day, I talk with colleagues who are confused about what is important to consider in selecting and using a therapy laser in their practice. They hear many conflicting opinions regarding lasers and don’t know who or what to believe.
I have written this article about 5 costly mistakes to avoid that can help you make the right decision before choosing a laser. As a clinician, I believe that the laser you choose should be the one best suited for your clinical purposes, and not a...
