On October 7th, Kathleen Toepp Neuhoff, DPM, DVM was installed as president of the Indiana Podiatric Medical Association (IPMA). It was very special because the oath was administered by Dr. Neuhoff’s father, Frank C Toepp, DPM, who was a previous IPMA President.

MO Podiatrist is Classic Car Collector

Board certified podiatrist John Riley IV, DPM has been treating foot and ankle ailments for three decades. And Riley, who was once ranked as a USA Triathlon All American athlete, is equipped with insight specifically for podiatric sports medicine. He treats amateurs and professionals, including dancers and ballerinas in the Kansas City Ballet.

Dr. John Riley and his '57 Chevrolet convertible

Dr. Riley has won two Best of Show awards for vintage cars he customized and brought back to life in his spare time. He’s often seen driving a ’57 Chevrolet convertible. The car, white with chrome trim and flashy tail fins, is one of six models he has restored. “Its interior is red and white. It’s just gorgeous,” he said. “I guess classic cars are something to see, like works of art. I stop at a gas station: 2 minutes putting the gas in and 30 minutes answering questions about the car."

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Aussie Med Assn Wants to Ban Podiatrists From Using Term "Surgeons"

Only two types of Australian health professionals are allowed to call themselves a surgeon – doctors and podiatrists. If the Australasian Medical Association (AMA) had its way, there would only be one. In a new submission to an independent review of podiatric surgeons, the medical association made its feelings known. “Podiatric surgery is the only form of human medical treatment where a person other than a doctor can take a scalpel and cut into a patient,” it said.

“Not only are they able to cut into a patient, a podiatric surgeon with no formal medical degree or surgical training (Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons – FRACS or equivalent) can then operate on bones, tendons, joints, and undertake internal fixation with screws for example.” They can even do joint replacements, the AMA said, adding “on a human” in parentheses.

OIG NEWS
Consumer Alert: Remote Patient Monitoring

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General is alerting the public about a fraud scheme involving monthly billing for remote patient monitoring. This scam involves signing up Medicare enrollees for remote patient monitoring (RPM). Legitimate RPM involves using medical devices such as scales, glucose monitors, blood pressure cuffs, cardiac rhythm devices, and other equipment to remotely monitor for anomalies in patients with chronic medical conditions. This new treatment is beneficial for those whose condition might deteriorate quickly, where monitoring can reduce complications, hospitalizations, or death.

Unscrupulous companies are signing up Medicare enrollees for this service, regardless of medical necessity. Scammers have several ways to make contact. It may involve phone solicitations (“cold calling”), internet ads (“click bait”), or television advertising. These contacts may originate from a Durable Medical Equipment Company (DME) or pharmacy. Equipment may or may not be sent or is equipment that is not FDA-approved. Billing then occurs for set-up, patient teaching, and monthly monitoring of data. Most often, the monthly monitoring never happens, but the enrollee is billed monthly anyway.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Podiatrist Marketing Strategies in the Evolving Healthcare Landscape

With the rising incidence of foot disorders, especially among the elderly population, and the global podiatry services market projected to reach $6.1 billion by 2033, it’s crucial to have stellar marketing strategies for your podiatry practice. This will improve your online presence and help you meet your patients where most of them look for a doctor first—the Internet.

6. Gather Patient Feedback

A strong marketing strategy doesn’t end with successful treatment; it goes beyond. Encourage patient feedback through survey forms, emails, and text messages to gain insights into how satisfied or dissatisfied your patients are with your podiatry services. This will help you provide a better level of care and as a result, have happier patients. Remember, a satisfied patient is a loyal one. If a patient is happy with your treatment and the overall in-office experience, they will be more likely to leave positive reviews, contributing to your strong online presence.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES)
From: Janet McCormick, MS

Dr. Hultman’s article, “Addition by Subtraction” is very interesting in that dentists began to ‘add by subtraction’ in their practices 6 decades ago: they embraced the training of dental hygienists to perform lower-level care they did not care to do: cleaning and x-rays. They eliminated these tasks almost completely from their practice rooms by delegating them to these trained professionals. Podiatrists should consider the same tactics in their practices.

As a former dental hygienist, I wonder why more podiatrists do not hire certified medical nail technicians to perform routine foot care. These nail technicians are advanced trained (and licensed) to perform the tasks of routine foot care in their services and can relieve the podiatrist of them to practice ‘real’ podiatry. While many podiatrists are doing so and enjoying the benefits of their decision, more continue to hold back.

These advanced trained nail technicians are special people who care about providing safe care within their scope of practice for persons who are chronically ill and/or elderly and have taken special training to do so safely. They wish to work directly for a podiatrist or to have a referral podiatrist to refer their aesthetic clients to who may need their care. Those of you who may need some support in this lower-level care in your office might give this some thought. Try delegating these tasks to a certified medical nail technician as dentists did to a registered dental hygienist. Most of you who do will never go back to performing those tasks except on those who specifically need you.
