AT THE COLLEGES
NYCPM Class of 2018  Gives Thanks for Cadaver Donors with Convocation

Recently,  the students of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) class of 2018 held a convocation of thanks. This is a tradition in medical schools for students as they finish anatomy. In the case of our students, this year for the first time the convocation is being held as they complete their second anatomy course, their LEAN course. They completed General Anatomy in June, and the Lower Extremity course this fall.

(L-R) Michael Sayad, Mai Pham, Vrunda Dalal, Michael Paula, all Class of 2018, and Dr. Daria Dykyj. On Monitor Drs. Anthony DiLandro, Joy Reidenberg, and Daria Dykyj.

This is an important way for medical schools to help the medical students think about the personal dedication and sharing on the part of the donors, according to Daria Dykyj, PhD, Professor of Lower Extremity and Anatomy. At the October 19 ceremony, NYCPM students had a chance to share their thoughts about how grateful they are for the opportunity of learning by using human cadavers. Students offered their heartfelt thanks with poems, and lit candles in memory and tribute to the generosity of the donors.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
MI Podiatrist Uses Surgical Safety Monitor

Horror stories abound about surgical instruments accidentally left inside patients after an operation. More often, instruments get lost or inadvertently tossed out with the trash. All are problems that retired nurse Carol Schmucker set out to solve when she invented the Surgical Safety Scanner, a new system for tracking surgical instruments for accurate surgical counts, inventory control, and billing for surgical services. “When a surgeon opens a tray now, there’s a piece of paper that tells them what’s on the tray and they take a visual count to match,” Schmucker said. “By having each instrument tagged you always can find where each instrument is and you can bring up each instrument visually along with its history. You can bring it up on the screen: what’s missing, what you need and what’s there.”

Dr. Jeff Szczepanski (photo: Tessa lightly)

Podiatrist Dr. Jeff Szczepanski, owner of Great Lakes Foot & Ankle Specialists, has been using it in his practice for several months. He said already it has proved its worth in staff teaching. Now he hopes it will save on instrument replacement costs of $100 or more per instrument and ultimately improve patient safety. “I’m excited about tracking my instruments,” said Szczepanski, who has his staff scan all instruments at the start and end of each day as well as around surgeries. “They’re so expensive that, as owner of a practice, it’s very frustrating when an instrument goes missing. Many times (staff are) dumpster diving through some nasty, bloody trash.”

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS
Bret Ribotsky:  How does a podiatrist go about learning how to do research?

Dr. Adam Landsman

Adam Landsman: First, find a mentor - someone who is doing research in you area. Contact them and say that you would like to get involved. Everyone interested in doing research  needs to get CITI training (citiprogram.org). It's a good start.  Look for national seminars to see if they are having a research track. Many have had these in the past. If you are interested, let the seminars know and hopefully, they will respond.

Meet the Masters airs live on Tuesday night. This week's guest is to be announced. You can register for this and future events by clicking here.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
Five Steps to Improve the Patient Experience - Part 1

It is believed that strengthening the relationship between healthcare providers and their patients will lead to earlier detection of diseases, better patient compliance, reduction of cost, and improved clinical outcomes, among other benefits. To that end, the ACA has instituted measures to change physician behavior and hold them accountable for improving the patient experience.

By 2017, practices will be required to conduct and report Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems - Clinician & Group Surveys to CMS as part of the transition to a new value-based reimbursement program. The intent over time is to improve population health for the United States, while reducing the cost of medical care. One of the most important contributing factors to accomplish this requires improving the patient experience.

Government shouldn't be penalizing anyone. Whether it was e-prescribing, EHR, or PQRS, there should be incentives only, not penalties. We have done the work and should be praised and paid for participating. These blackmail techniques are for the mob. They are extortion.
