NY Podiatrist Discusses Taking Care of Your Feet When Traveling

Packing more than one pair of shoes takes up precious space in your suitcase, but this may be the difference between enjoying your vacation and staying in your hotel because you can’t take more than 10 steps without feeling excruciating foot pain. “Switch it up from an active morning of sightseeing to a casual, "lounge-y" lunch and an afternoon of shopping to a dressy dinner and exploration of nightlife,” says Dr. Jacqueline Sutera, who is a member of Vionic’s Innovation Lab . “If you wear the same shoes all day, they may cause injury if not appropriate for long periods of walking and standing.”

Pads, cushions, and insoles will also help. Gel pads, for example, won't absorb odors like traditional fabric pads. They also last longer and are washable and re-usable. “There are also some really great silicone adhesive gel cushions that stick onto feet instead of inside the shoes,” suggested Dr. Sutera.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY IN THE NEWS - PART 1
Bahamas Podiatrist Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

While World Diabetes Day was being commemorated last week, Minister of Health Dr. Duane Sands brought the dismal news that The Bahamas is the world leader in the prevalence of diabetes. His remarks came as the Bahamas Podiatric Medical Association (BPMA) launched its first annual conference under the theme: “New Hope for Diabetic Feet.”

Dr. Deborah Raine

At the conference, BPMA presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Deborah Raine, who in 1974 made history as the first Bahamian podiatrist. She became a founding member of the Bahamas Diabetic Association (BDA). The BDA was established in March 1986. .

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY IN THE NEWS - PART 2
UK Students Given a Unique Look into Podiatry

Twenty-four students studying health courses at East Sussex College Hastings were given an insight into podiatry and anatomy during a recent trip to the Leaf Hospital in Eastbourne. Specialists took students around the clinic and gave them an interactive session on the anatomy of a body that was donated to the center for scientific research. They looked at the structural organs, bones, and soft tissue and were able to get hands-on and palpate the cadavers.

UK students observe plaster casting for orthotics

The students were then taught how to plaster and cast the foot and learn about how orthotics are made. Podiatry experts then told the students about the link between podiatry and forensics, and how organizations like the FBI and CSI are able to solve crime cases using gait analysis. The final part of the day enabled the students to observe and learn from third-year university students as they assessed and treated patients with minor foot or lower limb conditions.

ON THE LECTURE CIRCUIT

IL Podiatrist Lectures on Coming Healthcare Changes

Fifty podiatric physicians and surgeons attended a three-hour lecture by Sev Hrywnak, DPM, MD presented by the Medical Business Institute. The main focus of the presentation was how a podiatric physician and surgeon can be prepared for the coming healthcare changes. “Everything will change because of big data and artificial intelligence. A lack or ignorance of knowledge are the roots of many of our current problems and conflicts in medicine. “Podiatry will be greatly affected as analytics show and the DPM should be aware and be prepared for these changes.” said Hrywnak.

Dr. Sev Hrywnak

The lecture covered how the podiatry office needs to be re-structured, how to make a proposal to CMS, when the time comes for bundled payments under the Bundled Payment for Care Improvement model (BPCI), how to become part of integrative groups, and how to make sure podiatry is part of the major changes proposed by the healthcare disrupters (Amazon, JP Morgan Chase, and Berkshire-Hathaway). “The intent going forward in healthcare is to encourage standardized, cost-effective healthcare decisions,” stated Hrywnak.

IN THE COURTS
Appeal in IN Amputated Toe Lawsuit Denied

An Indiana appeals court has upheld a summary judgment against an Anderson woman who attempted to sue her healthcare providers after her toes were amputated. Mary N. Poole of Anderson said her healthcare fell below the applicable standards causing her to lose portions of her toes causing impairment, disfigurement, pain, suffering, and emotional distress.

In her civil lawsuit, Poole said her doctor of podiatric medicine subjected her to a “risky, non-emergency surgery” and she was deprived of an opportunity to make an informed decision on whether or not she should undergo the procedure. On April 10, 2017, a summary judgment in favor of the healthcare providers was granted in Madison County Circuit Court 6. Poole appealed the judgment. Court of Appeals Judge Elaine B. Brown, however, upheld the lower court’s finding affirming Poole’s case lacked expert testimony to establish the required standard of care.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Steps to Improve Patient Relationships and Increase Staff Efficiency – Part 1

1. Give Patients The Power To Schedule Appointments at Their Convenience. Some patients need to set appointments after hours; others simply like online convenience. Both groups prefer self-scheduling. In fact, 64 percent of patients will book appointments online by 2019. Giving patients the power to schedule their own appointments is smart for several reasons.

First, it increases the chance that they’ll keep their appointments. Second, you’ll connect with patients the way they prefer. This increases satisfaction. Self-scheduling also frees your front office team to work on other tasks.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

Dr. Musella is correct when he asserts that we often rely too heavily on evidence-based medicine and ignore clinical judgment based on common sense combined with years of clinical experience.

Part of the problem is that we still live in an era where research into new medications and subsequent papers need to be funded by corporate entities. Unfortunately, if a procedure or medication cannot earn a company a 'pot of gold', they won't fund the research. At board meetings of the American Society of Podiatric Medicine, we have often lamented that there are no good studies to the support the use of PT blocks, when clinically indicated, because there are no corporations willing to fund the research.

The great thing about EBM, however, is that it prevents 'bullies' in many medical fields, including ours, from promoting non-effective treatments based solely on their personal opinions and political status in their respective professions.
