Most Patients Don't Allow Enough Time for Ankle Sprains to Heal: MA Podiatrist

As one of the most common joint injuries, with more than 3 million occurring annually, many people perceive ankle sprains to be non-serious injuries that can be treated at home with rest and ice. However, according to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS), not seeking proper treatment can have serious long-term effects on a person's return to functionality and increase the likelihood of a future serious sprain. In fact, it's estimated that 40 percent of people with ankle sprains will develop long-term joint issues. And for this reason, ACFAS warns people there is no such thing as "just a simple sprain."

Dr. Gregory Catalano

"The severity of an ankle sprain depends on whether the ligament is stretched, partially torn, or completely torn, as well as the number of ligaments involved," says Gregory Catalano, DPM, FACFAS, a Massachusetts foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. "While the RICE method (rest, ice, compression, elevation) combined with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, will minimize swelling and pain, we find most patients do not give themselves enough time to rehabilitate and heal."

First prize in the residents category was awarded to Matthew Reiner, DPM of St. Vincent Charity Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio for his abstract "Can Procalcitonin be Used as a Biomarker for Predicting Amputation Level in Lower Extremity Infections?"

Desert Foot Chairman Dr. Robert Frykberg

A highlight of the conference was the presentation by William Li, MD entitled “Angiogenesis at Crossroad of Regenerative Wound Therapy”, in which he mapped out the near future direction that this vibrant field is moving. OUTSIDE INTERESTS - INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS
Aussie Podiatrist is Co-Owner of 100-1 Melbourne Cup Longshot Winner

Six mates have lived their Melbourne Cup dream. Describing themselves as “small fry owners’’, the men decided to pool their cash and buy a nag they hoped might win at a country meeting. Five years later, they are part-owners of a Melbourne Cup winner — Prince Of Penzance, nicknamed POP. “We are still pinching ourselves,’’ co-owner podiatrist Sam Brown said. The syndicate bought a couple of tried racehorses but found only limited success after chipping in $5,000 each. Keeping it secret from their wives and girlfriends, they scraped together enough cash for one last try — buying a 10 per cent stake in a yearling.

Despite sickness and injury, POP has netted more than $600,000 in prize money from 23 starts and before the ultimate triumph in the Melbourne Cup. “It was a pure last throw at the stumps," Brown said. “We didn’t even know if he would make the racetrack or not. We had no money left for more horses so we were prepared to get out of the game if he was no good." Rather than throw in the towel, the team instead saw their beloved horse jump from barrier 1 as a $101 outsider winning over six million dollars.

DIABETES RESEARCH
Patients With Diabetic Foot Ulcers Show Cognitive Deterioration

Diabetics with diabetic foot ulcers turn out to have substantially impaired cognitive function compared with diabetes patients without diabetic foot ulcers, a study at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev has found. "Generally speaking, there is a clear correlation between diabetes and cognitive deterioration," explains Dr. Rachel Natovich, who led the study, the first to compare cognitive performance in patients with and without diabetic foot ulcers.

"Diabetes is a multi-system condition and, among other things, it affects the brain. The risk of a diabetic developing dementia is twice that of a 'normal' person. Diabetic foot ulcers are simply a symptom that the diabetes is causing deterioration of the entire cardio-vascular system," she said.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY

Five Hiring Tips for Medical Practice Managers - Part 8

Look For Medicare Exclusions

In addition to checking backgrounds and recommendations, medical practice managers should be sure that their top job candidates do not turn up on the Medicare exclusions list. Health and Human Services maintains a list of nearly 52,000 healthcare workers and executives who, due to their conviction of healthcare crimes, are excluded from providing even indirect care to Medicare patients. On an ongoing basis, the department recommends that providers check their personnel rosters against the list once a month. Practices that violate the exclusion rules can have their Medicare payments taken back, plus incur fines of $10,000 per claim.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PQRS)
RE: PQRS Denial
From: James R. Christina, DPM

In response to the questions about PQRS denials, APMA has become aware that a large number of members have received letters from CMS indicating that they would be receiving a 2-percent payment reduction in 2016 for failing to meet the requirements for PQRS reporting in 2014. Many of these members indicated that they utilized the claims method for reporting individual measures and they were certain they had met the requirements.

APMA has reached out to CMS regarding this issue on behalf of members to investigate the large number of failures, and CMS has indicated that it is looking into this situation. APMA would also like to gather data on the number of members receiving the payment reduction for 2016. Please complete this very brief survey so we may compile data for our continued discussion with CMS.
