ABFAS Announces Surgeons of Tomorrow Student Winners
The American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ABFAS) has announced the winners of the Surgeons of Tomorrow Student Conference Scholarship Contest. Paul Adeyemi, a third-year podiatric medical student at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine won the written essay category. Olivia Mackey, a second-year podiatric medical student at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Podiatric Medicine, won the video category.

More than 40 podiatric medical students from across the nation submitted videos and essays articulating why ABFAS Board Certification is important to them as aspiring podiatric surgeons and how they will use it to benefit their patients. The winners were selected by members of the ABFAS Communications Committee. ABFAS will cover registration and travel costs for the winners to attend the ACFAS 82nd Annual Scientific Conference in Tampa, Florida, February 1–4, 2024.

Podiatric Medicine Fellowship First of its Kind in Canada
A significant philanthropic gift, made by the Zivot Family and matched by the Calgary Health Foundation, has established the Rose Zivot Fellowship in Limb Preservation and Foot Reconstructive Surgery, a one-year fellowship in limb salvage and foot reconstruction—the first of its kind in Canada. Based out of the Zivot Limb Preservation Centre at Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the fellowship is a collaboration with the University of Calgary Department of Surgery.

The first appointed Fellow, Ali Manji, DPM, a born and raised Calgarian, has a keen interest in limb preservation and early intervention. His evidence-based research approach will look at patient hospitalization rates and length of stays in Alberta. Dr. Manji is a graduate of Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. He completed his comprehensive podiatric surgical residency at Mercy Regional Medical Center and is interested in both limb preservation and reconstructive surgery.

UK Podiatrist Explains Why Foot Health is Important as You Age
According to podiatrist Trevor Prior, "Foot pain gets worse as we age. Studies suggest that anywhere between 71 and 87 per cent of older people will have it in some form – be it pain in the ball of the foot, bunions, arthritis in the big toe joint, corns and calluses, or heel pain. Severe foot pain is also associated with a 62 per cent higher risk of serious falls. So over the years, good foot care and footwear become ever more vital."

"Many conditions show up early in the feet. Inflammatory arthritis often manifests in the foot before anywhere else, various neuromuscular diseases too – people who have back problems sometimes show up first with foot drop (or difficulty lifting the front part of the foot). Diabetes causes poor circulation and sensation in the feet. I had a patient who arrived with foot pain and it turned out he had leukemia, which had infiltrated the spinal-cord, hence the pain. Another presented with a hot swollen toe and it turned out to be from a sexually transmitted disease," says Prior.

I worked with Mike Crosby for evaluation, pricing, and negotiation of the terms of the sale of my solo practice in 2017. I found him to be a great resource. At a minimum, a 5-year look back at financials should be performed. I would avoid the low-priced consultants. You could leave a lot of money on the table.
There is much more to it than you can imagine. Find a highly regarded medical practice business attorney (not malpractice). Your CPA should also be involved if they are qualified in this arena and may be able to recommend an attorney to interview.
